  1. Summary of RTCA SC-202 Discussions with Consumer Electronics Industry Identifying issues and developing consensus based recommendations to facilitate safe use of portable electronic devices (PEDs) for our mutual customer base.

What Are RTCA SC-202 Objectives • Collaborate to achieve a clearer understanding of: • actual PED spurious emissions (as potential sources) • actual aviation equipment immunity (as potential victims) • aircraft environment and anticipated passenger use cases • Evaluate FCC Part 15 and RTCA DO-160 cat M limits with respect to actual product performance • Develop consensus-based recommendations to: • facilitate ubiquitous safe use of PEDs, T-PEDson aircraft by our common customer base • explore practical and mutually-beneficial self-regulation of PED emission compatibility • Develop a common understanding of theevolving market for PED use in RF sensitiveenvironments

Summary of RTCA SC-202 Contacts Contacts with Consumer Electronics Industry Associations, presented RTCA SC-202 “Call for a Collaborative Effort” CEA Technology & Standards Council (TSC) • CEA member companies declined opportunity for dialog with SC-202 • CEA offered to facilitate appropriate documentation in coordination with RTCA if their members request WiMedia Alliance • Regulatory Group reviewed and approved without dissent • Devices built to WiMedia Alliance standards will meet or exceed RTCA SC-202 characteristics for compatibility with airplane systems Wi-Fi Alliance / IEEE 802.18 • WFA believes devices built to their requirements will meet or exceed RTCA SC-202 characteristics for compatibility with airplane systems • As they are an interoperability group, recommended IEEE as standards organization would be better to provide statement of compatibility • Ongoing discussions with IEEE 802.18

  4. Summary of RTCA SC-202 Contacts Contact with IEEE 802. Committees: • Determine if documented standards for devices already require emissions compatible with RTCA proposed emissions requirements for compatibility with airplane systems • Does this require an extension to the current emissions mask, which would define emissions limits in the two defined aviation bands? • Determine what assurance or advice can be given to RTCA SC-202 for guidelines to aviation industry • Potentially similar to statement from WiMedia Alliance: “Devices built to xxxxx standards will meet or exceed RTCA SC-202 characteristics for compatibility with airplane systems”

  5. Remaining Goals SC-202 work to be completed: • Documented statements of compliance or non-compliance with proposed RTCA SC-202 spurious emissions limits for PED technologies • Incorporate statements into final revision of guidelines document “Guidance on Allowing Transmitting Portable Electronic Devices (T‑PEDs) on Aircraft” • Provide context for document users: • How user may “take credit” for compliant devices • Technologies where compliance is not assured puts onus on document user to assess and propose mitigation plans for risks • Set stage for future technologies to consider compatibility with aviation environment when setting spurious emissions requirements

Incentives Qualifying PED technologies for use onboard aircraft: • Adds possible marketing value to advertised “airplane friendly” devices • Gives frequent business travelers an incentive to purchase such devices • May help alleviate “multi-mode” interference • Makes it easier for airlines to get approval for use of the devices
