Engineering Design Challenge S.T.E.M. Earth & Space Science LabPedestal Challenge
Design Challenge… • The Earth and Space Science Laboratory has a new organism they would like to display. • The ESSL board of directors is looking for a group that will build the pedestal to display the organism. • The group with the best design will be hired! • You will need to collaborate and work as a team in order to successfully complete the challenge.
Criteria… • What is a pedestal or display? • Pedestal: (n) a support or foundation, an architectural support or base (for a column or statue) • Display: (n) something shown to the public, exhibiting openly in public view • Display must • be 1 ½ feet tall • be able to hold the stuffed organism for display • use only the materials supplied
What you need to know… Materials… Group member jobs… The READER will read the directions for the activity. The GETTER will gather the materials needed for the activity. The DESIGNER will create the pedestal design. The RECORDER will record the data. The ENCOURAGER will motivate group members and stop arguments. ALL will take part in the building and clean up. • 1 pack of 100 index cards • 1 roll of tape TOOLS & RESOURCES… • 1 pair of scissors • Measuring device • Pencils/pens • Computer with print materials • You do not need to use all of the materials and tools. Tools cannot be part of your display.
Did the directions give you all the information you need to complete this challenge? What questions do you still have?
Question that… • Why did your group choose this solution as the best? Was it your best solution/idea? Would one of your other ideas have been better? Why or why not? • Can you add to your original idea to make it better? What would you add to it and why? • How can your group convince the ESSL Board of Directors that your design is the best?
How can we apply what we learned from this challenge to real life? How did we apply what we learned from other S.T.E.M. challenges to this challenge? How can we apply what we learned from this challenge to a S.T.E.M. career?
