Student Questions for Purposeful Learning (SQPL) Mark Brewer
Purposeful Learning • Associated with higher levels of engagement and achievement • How can we keep students engaged and interested in material?
SQPL • SQPL is designed to gain and hold students’ interest in material by having them ask and answer their own questions. • Why does this work well? • When students ask questions… • They pay close attention • Want their question answered • Care about the content • Questions become vehicles for learning • Become interrogators
Instructions on Process • 1st Step • Come up with a statement related to the material that provokes interest and curiosity (The ratio of boys to girls in the class is greater than the ratio of the mass of the earth to the mass of Neptune) • 2nd Step • Have students pair up and come up with 2 or 3 questions related to the subject • 3rd Step • Have students write their questions on the board (Teacher may need to add additional questions)
Instructions on Process • 4th Step • Start covering material • 5thStep • Stop periodically to allow students to discuss and answer their questions based on the material presented.
Pro vs. Con • Pro • Stimulates deep levels of thinking • Sustains attention • Leads into new material • Con • Off topic questions • Time consuming • Does not work well with quiet classes
