Advisory • NYMSA~ Seven Essential Elements • 1. A philosophy and mission that reflect the intellectual and developmental needs and characteristics of young adolescents. • 3. An organization and structure that support both academic excellence and personal development.

Students • One More Positive Thing for Our Students!
What is Advisory • Advisory is an organized group of 1 adult and 10-12 students that serves as the students first line of affiliation in their school.
What is Advisory • Advisory groups meet twice a week for about 20 minutes.
What is Advisory • Advisors lead activities with their groups that promote productive conversations.
What is Advisory • Advisory will be provided with more than enough activities for each week of the year. • Advisors can pick and choose which activities they will use and have the freedom to lead the group discussions in a different direction or present different activities. • Special topics or activities may be given to teachers through out the year.
Advisory is not……. • A curriculum that must be completed
Advisory is not…. • Counseling • School counselors, social workers, psychologists are trained for counseling and will continue to do this.
In a Nut Shell • You want to give the kids an adult and a group of other kids to connect with and get to know on a more personal level. Advisors should model good decisions and positive behaviors.

Why Advisory • Promotes mutually respectful and meaningful relationships
Why Advisory • Provides individual attention to students
Why Advisory • Provides each student with an opportunity to belong.
Why Advisory • Emphasizes the social and emotional development of every young adolescent.

Why Advisory • Allows teachers to be actively involved in the affective development of students
Why Advisory • It is a fun, non stressful portion of a teachers work week in which they can connect with students!!!!!!!

“What Would YOU Pick” Would you rather have $5,000 to spend any way you want or $1,000,000 that you would have to spend helping others (not a relative or friend) Take moment discussing what you would pick and why at you table.
“What Would YOU Pick” Ok, Let’s say everyone chose to take the million. Now discuss with your group how you would spend it to help others.
