Advisory • NYMSA~ Seven Essential Elements • 1. A philosophy and mission that reflect the intellectual and developmental needs and characteristics of young adolescents. • 3. An organization and structure that support both academic excellence and personal development.

What is Advisory • Advisory is an organized group of 1 adult and 10-12 students that serves as the students first line of affiliation in their school.
What is Advisory • Advisory groups meet twice a week for about 20 minutes.
What is Advisory • Advisors lead activities with their groups that promote productive conversations.
What is Advisory • Advisory will be provided with more than enough activities for each week of the year. • Advisors can pick and choose which activities they will use and have the freedom to lead the group discussions in a different direction or present different activities. • Special topics or activities may be given to teachers through out the year.
Advisory is not……. • A curriculum that must be completed
Advisory is not…. • Counseling • School counselors, social workers, psychologists are trained for counseling and will continue to do this.
In a Nut Shell • You want to give the kids an adult and a group of other kids to connect with and get to know on a more personal level. Advisors should model good decisions and positive behaviors.

Why Advisory • Provides each student with an opportunity to belong.

“What Would YOU Pick” Would you rather have $5,000 to spend any way you want or $1,000,000 that you would have to spend helping others (not a relative or friend) Take moment discussing what you would pick and why at you table.
