Log-linear Analysis • Log-linear analysis is used when the outcome and explanatory variables are both categorical. It is an extension of the χ2 test for two by two contingency table. • When there are several categories interpretation of a contingency table by means of simple χ2 test is difficult to interpret and a more robust test like log-linear analysis is employed.
Log-linear analysis - 2 • In log-linear analysis tables are formed with all the categories. The logarithms of cell frequencies are estimated by linear equations. • The log-linear model so developed starts with all the one-way, two-ways, and higher order ways associations. • Terms are dropped and models are constructed such that cell frequencies are accounted for by a minimum number of terms. A comparison of the observed and expected frequencies for each cell using the likelihood estimate makes the evaluation of the final model.
