Starting a Science Olympiad Team at Your School. The only real rule is your team of 18 can have a maximum of only 8 fifth graders. The balance of your team is made up of fourth graders and, if you want, third graders. If you want your team can be less than 18.

The only real rule is your team of 18 can have a maximum of only 8 fifth graders. The balance of your team is made up of fourth graders and, if you want, third graders.
If you want your team can be less than 18. If you want you can have two teams!
You can start and end the practice sessions when you want and have them as often as you want. We start in October and meet every 2 weeks for 1 hour.
The key is to have your team ready for our 2012 Cobb County competition on March 3rd at Walton High School, and the state competition on May 12th (?) at KSU.
You will need a 5th edition Science Olympiad manual. Sally Creel may have a copy for you if you ask. If not, order one ($23) at http://www.aug.edu/gaso/k-5.html
The 18 events we practice for change each year but here are a few favorites and a few that are being considered for this year:
A is for Anatomy:A look at all human body things! Barge Building:Build an aluminum foil boat and load it with pennies until it sinks.
Bridge Building:Using straws and straight pins build the longest span you can to support an eraser. Crime Busters:Given clues and various solutions, uncover the culprit.
Disease Detectives:Try to discover the disease from symptoms given. Pasta Bridge:Can you design a bridge using spaghetti?
Large Number Estimation:In centimeters, how high is the ceiling of this room? Mystery Architecture:You are given supplies to construct the tallest tower you can to support a tennis ball.
Rock Hound:Your team will identify rocks from actual samples. Straw Egg Drop:Construct a container from straws and tape to protect your egg from a drop to the floor!
Water Rockets:Build a rocket from a 2 liter soda bottle and shoot it for longest “hang time.” Starry, Starry Night:Do you know your way around the Universe?
Weather or Not:A look at the why, the how and the what of the weather? Write it; Do it:A team member describes in writing an object for a team member to construct.
As I mentioned, I start my team in October. I do this to allow the Science Olympiad committee to determine what 2011 events will be used.
There are two ways I have used in the past: • An application, experiment demonstration approach. • An application, • Science Fair approach.
The two handouts you have support either Approach 1 (08-09) or Approach 2 (10-11).
Copies of these applications are available for download and your modification at: http://mtbethel.blogs.com/science_olympiad/ And I am available at : James.Morris@CobbK12.org
Three important things to insure your sanity: • Parent support. • Colleague support. • Administration support
Thank you! Now, let’s try an event!
