Cyberspace IS the “real world” • One in Six students report being bullied electronically in the past 12 months (CDC, 2011) • Online bullying has become a major factor in school absences and contributes to teen suicide. • Laws in most states (including PA) now include cyber bullying as a criminal offense. • Anonymity in social networking sites is almost non-existent. • The internet is FOREVER!
Social networking and college • In 2011, 26% of college admissions officers checked Facebook as part of the applicant review process (Kaplan, 2011). • 35% of those who do check FB found something that negatively impacted an applicant’s chance of being admitted (Kaplan, 2011). • 87% of colleges use Facebook for recruiting purposes. • Does your FB page represent you well? • Have you Googled yourself?
What is Trolling? • The “scourge of the Internet” (CNN, 2013) • Trolling is the act of purposefully antagonizing other people on the internet, generally on message boards. (Urban Dictionary) • In the late 1980s, Internet users adopted the word “troll” to denote someone who intentionally disrupts online communities. • Trolling is dependent upon anonymity
