Everyday Life *Marriages arranged by parents • Girls 12-14 • Boys 20-40 (after job or military training) *Education -boys: grammar, music, gymnastics, public speaking or military techniques -pedagogues: slaves who go to school with the sons of the wealthy to make sure they learn lessons, taught them to hunt and fight -girls: taught at home by mothers or slaves only some could read

Olympics • Held in honor of Greek gods every 4 years • First Olympics in 776 BC • Only for men • Won olive leaf wreaths, gifts, food, job, home • Banned in 800 AD with rise of Christianity • Modern Olympics began in 1896
Greek Art and Architecture Classic age = time period when civilizations produce achievements which serve as models for future civilizations
Architecture • Parthenon – temple built to honor Athena -Goddess of wisdom, warfare, strategy, handicrafts and reason • Acropolis – highest point in a city with many government buildings
Columns • Columns -doric = plain -Ionic = curly features -Corinthian = most decorative
Art • Usually gods or athletes • Focus on idealistic forms (perfect) • Nike of Samothrace – winged goddess of victory • Discus Thrower by Myron
King Philip II • King of Macedonia wanted control of Greece and Persia • Greece warned but could not unite • Kings son Alexander led cavalry and defeated Greeks at only 18yrs old • Philip never invaded Persia because stabbed to death at daughters wedding
Alexander • Becomes king at 20 • Taught by Aristotle • Decided to invade Persia • King Darius III (Persia) has a huge army but is surprise attacked • King Darius flees and Alexander controls Anatolia
Alexander the Great • King Darius wants to make peace • Offers western part of kingdom • Alex wants all of Persia • Goes into Egypt and was made a pharaoh • Founded city of Alexandria at mouth of the Nile River • Alex goes back to Persia to confront Darius
Alexander Conquers • Alexander wins a huge battle and takes over Persia • Went to all cities and took riches and split them among his armies • Wanted to expand territory further • Went all the way to Indus River in India
The End of the Road • Soldiers fought for 11 years in strange places • Morale was low so went home • Wanted to unify his territory with roads • 11 days after arriving home he became ill and died one month before his 33rd birthday
