Resistance Living tilV-Day Matthew 13:1-52
Parables • Two Key Purposes • For Disciples: they were revealing; gave light regarding what God was doing in the world and in their lives • For the world: exposed hard hearts as people remained unresponsive to the message and person of Jesus
The Clandestine Invasion • Central Theme in this chapter: THE KINGDOM OF GOD • Central Theme in Jesus preaching—It means the ultimate rule of God that will subjugate all powers
The Clandestine Invasion • The kingdom will not come in a blaze of glory like they may have expected • It will come like a seed that is planted, takes root, and grows (13:3, 8, 23) • Evil will continue to resist the kingdom’s advance
The Clandestine Invasion • The tares will continue alongside of the wheat • Yet with all the resistance, the advance of the kingdom will continue • (vv. 31-35)
Resistance Living • The two latter parables call us to live in light of the new reality • Disciples’ eyes have been opened to what is really valuable • Live in light of what the world is blind to; act as a citizen of the new kingdom
New Teachers of What Counts • vv. 51-52 • We are like householders with treasure we are to bring out and to use to bless others • We are to dispense the truth of the new kingdom
