2009 SCHOLARSHIPS

1. 2009 SCHOLARSHIPS Awarding education grants and scholarships to low-income individuals residing in federally assisted rental housing owned, managed, or administered by NLHA members.

2. SCHOLARSHIP CATEGORIES THE MARY LOU MANZIE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to non-traditional students in an encouraging and non-discriminatory way by providing eligible applicants who demonstrate both merit and need a chance to pursue higher education or other training that will lead to better employment opportunities. THE NEIL CHURCHILL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to graduating high school seniors or current undergraduates who demonstrate both merit and need. THE WILLIAM F. GANDERT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to eligible graduating high school seniors or returning students who demonstrates both merit and need to pursue educational opportunities in a specific trade.

3. 2009 MARY LOU MANZIE SCHOLARS “Given the opportunity I can contribute greatly to our world and society...” – Meagan Hone Meagan Hone – studying biology at the University of Alabama in Huntsville Precious Allen – studying nursing at Lourdes College; Precious will be the first college graduate in her family Mehrnoush Aliaghaei – human rights activist; earning a master’s degree in fine arts from Columbia University Mimi Hang – physics student at Mount Holyoke College; Mimi plans to study engineering and possibly teach in an urban school

4. 2009 MARY LOU MANZIE SCHOLARS “I am dedicated, and motivated to achieve my goals and become self-sufficient” – Julie Hudak Julie Hudak – nursing student at the Community College of Beaver County; as a single mother of one, Julie’s foremost goal is to provide a stable future for herself and her daughter Elizabeth Harris – earning a degree in biological science at the University of Illinois at Chicago; Elizabeth hopes to eventually contribute to urban communities by helping to curb the AIDS/HIV epidemic Tawana Evans – studying nursing and pre-med at the University of Saint Mary

5. 2009 NEIL CHURCHILL SCHOLARS “Education will shape the entirety of my life” – Samuel Banya Samuel Banya – studying pre-med at East Stroudsburg University; Samuel plans to eventually contribute to society and gain financial freedom by becoming a doctor Dmitry Brown – student of finance and economics at Lehigh University; Dmitry immigrated from Russia as a child and is deeply appreciative of the freedom afforded himself and his mother in the United States, including the freedom to pursue an education Tina Liu – pre-pharmacy student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa; already working part-time in a local pharmacy

6. 2009 NEIL CHURCHILL SCHOLARS “It’s an amazing feeling, learning something new” – Margarita Pelkhe Fatemeh Fattahi – studying nursing and social work at George Mason University; she will have the opportunity of an education in the United States, which her mother did not have in Iran Margarita Pelkhe – accounting student at the University of Alaska Anchorage; wants to eventually own her own accounting business Thanh Lu – studying microbiology and languages at Saint Mary’s College of California

7. 2009 WILLIAM F. GANDERT SCHOLARS “This is a very important step forward in my life...” – Pamela Sue Williams Pamela Sue Williams – attending Colorado Technical University Online where she is working towards a bachelor’s degree in business Chris Handrick – studying animation and filmmaking at the Art Institute International of Minnesota; Chris also writes and illustrates his own comic series
