Mechanical Aspects • The frame was built out of PVC pipe for simplicity and cost effectiveness. • The fan blade is attached to a shaft that is spun through a bearing to reduce friction. • The magnets are attached to the end the shaft with tape. The poles of the magnets are opposing each other.
Electrical Aspects • The copper wire is wrapped perpendicular to the poles of the magnets to generate the most voltage. • We used 30 gauge copper wire to build our generator because its smaller size allowed us to wrap more wire in a smaller space. • During our tests we were generating between 4 and 4.12 volts.
Estimated Efficiency • KE=(1/2)*ρ*A*L*(v²) • P=(1/2)*ρ*A*v³ = .5*1.2*pi*.28^2*9.83^3 • Theoretical P = 140 Watts • Watts = amps*volts • Actual P = .353 Watts • η=(Actual/Theoretical)*100 • η= .353/140 *100 = .25% • KE = 1.88J
Design/Construction Issues • Funnel deemed unnecessary. • Toilet paper roll was not durable for our purposes. • PVC pipe. • Magnets oriented wrong with respect to the wire. • Trouble counter balancing the fan blade.
Conclusions • Learned how to function as a team and stick to a deadline. • Discovered how electrical generators work. • Producing one volt is not too hard once windmill is designed properly. • Our perception of windmills will change the windmills of the future.
