  2. Came up with the concept of the communications satellite in 1942 • Never took out a patent • Well know Science Fiction writer of the “Golden Age” • 2001 a Space Odyssey • Rendezvous with Rama

  3. Personal Wireless Routers • Probably your most cost effective security measure • Hides your computer completely from the outside world • Protects you from most worms, and intrusions • Protects you from port scans • Does not expose vulnerable services to the internet

  4. Personal Routers • With some broadband providers, you must buy the modem. Verizon DSL is an example • In this case, it makes good sense to buy a modem that is a router/AP • Some providers give you a modem which can connect to your computer • The router you buy should connect between the modem and the computer • Typically this means a router that takes ethernet as input.

  5. Personal Routers • Even the cheapest routers provide; • Network Address Translation NAT • DHCP • Port forwarding • Wireless security • MAC address restriction • WEP and WPA • More money buys more feature • Better integration with Windows

  6. Personal Routers • Most vendors use local addresses for the internal network • Almost universally, the addresses are in the pool 192.168.1.* • To communicate with the router, your IP address needs to be in this range • DHCP, or the setup software should handle this • Most router/APs can only be programmed via one of the ethernet ports.
