Strengths of the Byzantine Empire What happened after the fall of Rome?
Political Strength • 1. Skilled , well paid officials carried out policies and commands • 2. Headed by an all powerful emperor • 3. Highly Centralized Government • 4. Diplomacy (devious policies) = Byzantine
Military Strength • 1. Great Frontier forces • 2. Great Calvary and infantry • Rewarded soldiers with land grants • 3. Engineering Corps (instruction manuals for all soldiers)
Military • Used sword and javelin and had more effective armor • Built navy and used battering rams • Awesome weapon “Greek Fire” • Flammable liquid that was sprayed over the ships
Economic Strength • 1. Good Agriculture, manufacturing, and trade • 2. Constantinople– great location/ Bosporus Strait Italy
Economic Strength • 3. Income from trade important • 4. Controlled sea routes (Bosporus Strait)– large revenue from Tax revenues (tariffs) • 5. Paid high salaries and built huge public buildings
Vocabulary terms • Icons- Holy Pictures of statues • Patriarchs- most important leaders in the church • Iconoclasts- people who felt that the presence of icons constituted idol worship and should not be allowed
Vocabulary terms • Heresy- opinion that conflicts with church doctrine • Excommunication- official edict that bars a person from church membership or from taking part in any church ceremonies • Byzantines faith was a weakness and as strength because they argued about church doctrine and rituals, but Christianity also formed a vital part of their life
Christianity • Church Splits into two branches: • 1. Roman Catholic Church in the West • 2. Eastern Orthodox Church in the East

The Reign of Justinian The Byzantine Empire
Emperor Justinian • Ruled for 38 years • Exceptional talent to judge the abilities of others • General in the army • Trained in classical education • Law, music, architecture, theology • Big believer in picking people on ability and NOT wealth
Theodora, Empress of Byzantine Empire • Worked in circus (strong and intelligent) • She had Justinian change Byzantine law to improve the status of women • 1. husband could not beat his wife and she could sue him if he did. • 2. women could own property equal to dowry • DOWRY: money or goods that she brought to her husband when she got married • 3. widow didn’t have to surrender her children to a male relative– she could raise them now
Theodora • She forced her husband, Justinian, to stay and fight during the Nika revolt.
Belisarius • Commander in chief of the army- excellent soldier and leader • His wife and Theodora were best friends. He was loyal and a great military leader
Justinian Code • 1. Simplify current legal system • 2. Chose 10 men to do this job • 3. Combined Greek/Roman Traditions • 4. Formed the basis of civil law in west (took 6 years to perform this job) • 5. Word Justice comes from Justinian
Decline after Justinian • After his death civil wars and conflicts with others powers shocked the empire • The Muslim Empire was too much to handle for the Byzantine Empire
