AJOL journal selection criteria • Scholarly content, and original research • Peer reviewed content, and quality control standards • Ability to provide all content for inclusion on AJOL (tables of contents and abstracts and graphics) in electronic format • Permission from the publishers and authors to allow AJOL to operate a document delivery service • Published within the African continent • i.e. location and management of publishing strategy, business development, etc. www.ajol.info

AJOL history: INASP UK1998 - 2005 • Launched in early 1998, AJOL became operational a year later in 1999 with 10 science and 4 medical journals • The objectives of AJOL: • to see if online publication would increase visibility of African journals through greater access • To endeavour to build awareness of African research (within Africa and worldwide) • To attain financial stability through increased subscription and document delivery www.ajol.info

  6. AJOL – moves to African management by NISC in South Africa 2005 • From INASP in Oxford UK to NISC in Grahamstown South Africa • Funded by international organisations, including • Sida, Norad, DFiD • Not currently self-sustaining • “Owned” by the African journal community www.ajol.info

AJOL – evaluation 2000 and 2002 • Journals reported : • increased visibility - greater number of international article submissions - leading to quality improvements • Greater respectability, being showcased alongside other African academic publications • Users reported : • Greater awareness of African research • Ability to locate articles unavailable elsewhere www.ajol.info

AJOL / journal relationship • Each journal signs a MOA outlining responsibilities of AJOL and the journal • AJOL receives a print subscription to each journal or guaranteed access to the online version • AJOL fulfils all document delivery requests, and reimburses the journal(s) for every request (retaining a minimum amount for costs) • The journal supplies ToCs/abstracts in e-form, and AJOL or the journal staff load content to the database www.ajol.info

NISC’s Priorities for the future journal-related: • Addition of new journals in an ongoing fashion • online publication of full text • Website development to serve publishers and editor’s needs • greater support to journals through community-building and training • Sustainability through income generation • Greater marketing and promotion • Development of an Offline system for posting content via e-mail www.ajol.info

AJOL / users relationship • No formal agreement with users • Registration optional • Users browse/search site anonymously • All services on AJOL free • with the exception of document delivery • “Sophisticated” searching • Email Table of content alerts • Document delivery • Information about the journal • author guidelines, contact information, etc. www.ajol.info
