What is the prompt for this essay? • What 2 objects studied in class serve as the best symbols for The Giver?
What is the format of this essay? • This paper will follow the multi-paragraph format that we have been learning. It will include: • An introduction that includes an attention getter, bridge, and thesis. • 2 body paragraphs that begin with a topic sentence and use detailed, relevant support, including at least one “ice quote” within the evidence. Multiple connections should be drawn between the object and book. • A conclusion that restates the thesis sentence and ends with a memorable close.
Can I see a model of a body paragraph? An ice-cube could be considered a great symbol for the novel in many ways. For instance, ice-cubes are quite hard and can cause pain to other people. This can represent Mr. Scrooge. He was known through time as a hard, painful man. He is described as, “a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone, Scrooge. A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner” (2). This quote obviously shows that he was cold to other people and did not care a whit about the pain that was caused. There was other coldness in the book as well. Many of the poor found themselves treated coldly by the wealthy. The rag-pickers who showed up at the dead man’s bedside were absolutely unfeeling about the corpse, and the three gentleman discussing the funeral were uncaring as well. Aside from being cold, there is another way that ice-cubes can symbolize the novel. As ice meets heat and melts, it becomes life-giving water. This also symbolizes Scrooge. As he runs across some heat through meeting the ghosts, he melts. His now kind heart gives life to Tiny Tim, gives life to his relationship with his nephew, and gives life to other people in the city since he turned kind and gave away his money. Because ice can be rock-hard and painful and then turn useful, it is a good symbol of A Christmas Carol.
