  1. Do Now- February 16th, 2012 • Grab your notebook and please have a seat. • Think about the following and discuss the following: • “What went well on yesterday’s ECR? What did you feel could have gone better?” • Be prepared to share!

  2. Close reading: One way to understand a short story, speech, diary entry, or journal.

  3. Objectives • Students will read and interpretgiven texts, and respond to multiple choice questions. • SWBAT apply their learned test taking strategies as a way of preparing for AS2 MC. • D.O.L- Students will submit a completed set of multiple choice answers in response to a given text.

  4. Why should we close read these types of writing? • Generally, they are shorter in length. • Shorter writing = more word for word importance. • It is a good idea to read carefully

  5. Take the following passage… 8th July, 1942Into hiding - where would we go, in a town or to the country, in a house or a cottage? These were questions I was not allowed to ask, but I couldn't get them out of my mind. Margot and I began to pack some of our most vital belongings into a school satchel. The first thing I put in was this diary, then hair curlers, handkerchiefs, school books, a comb, old letters; I put in the craziest things with the idea that we were going into hiding. But I'm not sorry, memories mean more to me than dresses. • What is the tone of this piece? • Somber • Happy • Angry • Confused Discuss: How do we know this? Would we know the same thing if we just glanced?

  6. Here is another… • One day a countryman going to the nest of his goose found there an egg all yellow and glittering. When he took it up it was as heavy as lead and he was going to throw it away, because he thought a trick had been played on him. But he took it home on second thoughts, and soon found that it was an egg of pure gold. Every morning the same thing occurred, and he grew rich by selling his eggs. As he grew rich he grew greedy; and thinking to get at once all the gold the goose could give, he killed it and opened it only to find nothing. • What is this story really speaking to? • Issues of ambition and gluttony • Animal value and cruelty • Wealth is the only important thing in life • Country people cannot be trusted with nice things • Walk me through the steps you used to come to your answer

(3) Mary, labor so to be arrayed with the hidden man of the heart, (4) That with Mary thou mayst find thou hast chosen the better part. • Who is the author speaking to? 2) What does line 2 suggest? • God a) Joseph is happy • Satan b) Joseph is peaceful • Her friends c) Joseph is dead • Her children d) Joseph is very knowledgeable

  8. D.O.L- • In pairs, read the excerpt and answer the multiple choice questions along with it. • Once we are all finished, we will think aloud and talk our way through the answers.
