What is statistics? • A way of reasoning, along with a collection of tools and methods, designed to help us understand the world. • It is not all about the numbers. • It’s about the data • Data are values along with their context, without context they are just numbers! • Data is plural, datum is singular
Statistics is about variation • Imagine a population at a university you are considering attending. • Suppose that every student was enrolled in the same number of courses, spent the same amount of money on textbooks, and favored increasing student fees to support library services. • In this population, there is no variability in the number of courses, amount spent on textbooks, or student opinion on the fee increase.
A researcher would have an easy time drawing conclusions about these three variables. • It would not matter how many students were selected or how the students were selected. • This obviously is not the world we live in!
Three steps to statistics • Think first. • Know where you are headed and why. • Show • This is what most people think statistics is about. These are the computations. • Tell • You must explain your results so that someone else can understand your conclusion.
