DON’T LET IT HAPPEN TO YOU TELEMARKETINGtyler Cowman
IT’S A SCAM! • Every year, thousands of Americans lose anywhere from a few bucks to thousands of dollars through telemarketing scams
KNOW HOW THEY’LL GET YOU • It’s important to know the signs of a possible scam • - Cold Calls • - Direct Mail • - Broadcast or Print
SENIOR CITIZENS: BEWARE! • It’s hard to tell when they are lying, these are professionals! • May call when your lonely or try to act as friend • Hard to get them off the phone
HOW THEY’LL REEL YOU IN • PRIZES!!! • Vacations • Investments • Charities • Reloading Scams • Foreign Lotteries • Medical Discounts • Expiring Car Warranties
DEAD GIVE-A-WAYS IT’S A SCAM • If you hear any of these or similar lines, then you know it is almost 100% a scam • "You've been specially selected to hear this offer.“ • "You'll get a wonderful free bonus if you buy our product." • "You must send money right away.“ • "You don't need any written information about our company or references."
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF • Don’t be pressured to make an immediate decision. • Don’t give your credit card, checking account, or Social Security number to unknown callers. • Don’t pay for something merely because you’ll get a “free gift.” • Get all information in writing before you agree to buy. • Check out a charity before you give. Ask how much of your donation actually goes to the charity. Ask that written information be sent to you so you can make an informed giving decision. • If the offer is an investment, check with your state securities regulator to see if it’s properly registered. • Don’t send cash by messenger or overnight mail. • Don’t agree to any offer where you have to pay a “registration” or “shipping fee” to receive a prize or a gift. • Don’t confirm your account information over the phone or by email. Some callers have your billing information before they call you. They’re trying to get you to say “okay” so they can claim you approved a charge. • Beware of offers to “help” you recover money you may have lost previously. Be wary of callers saying they are law enforcement officers who will help you get your money back “for a fee.” • If you don’t want a business to call you again, say so. If they call back, they’re breaking the law.
THE NATIONAL DO NOT CALL REGISTRY • If you would like to be left alone, place your number on the National Do Not Call Registry. • Your registry will never expire, but after 31 days you will receive calls from companies you did business with
KNOW THE RULES • Knowing the rules will help prevent a scam from getting you! • A telemarketer cannot call if you asked them not to • A marketer can only call from 8 am to 9 pm • They must tell you it’s a sales call and who is doing the sales • They must tell you the total costs, and cannot withdraw any money from your accounts without your expressed authorization
EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE • Calls placed by consumer in response to ads and direct mail • Catalog sales • Business-to-business calls • Sales of franchises and pay-per-call services
TAKE ACTION! • If you think you’ve been contacted by a scam artist or if a telemarketer has broken one of the rules, report it to the National Do Not Call Registry or the Federal Trade Commission and the state Attorney General
