  4. Texas Independence • September 16,1821 • Very Few Mexicans in Texas • Led by Stephen Austin many new settlers from the south moved to Texas (20,000) • Slave Issue • Call for greater self governance by Austin • The Alamo • Sam Houston becomes president of Texas

  5. War with Mexico • James Polk (Pres. #11) calls for annexation of Texas as a slave state • Polk tries to buy California and New Mexico (Mexico Refuses) • John C. Fremont leads expedition into California. Mexico responds by sending troops into Texas • Kearney meets no resistance in New Mexico (wealthy Mexicans wanted to join US)

  6. California • Bear Flag Rebellion in Sonoma1846 • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo 1848- Mexico loses California, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and Arizona • Gadsen Purchase
