What is the Author’s Purpose? Ms. Lee’s Second Grade Class Standard: ELACC2R16: Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author want to answer, explain or describe.
Essential Questions: • Why did the author write this book? • What clues in the text help us to decide why the author wrote this book?
Lesson Objective • Given 10 exerts from 10 children’s books, students will correctly identify the author’s intended purpose on a multiple choice assessment consisting of 10 multiple choice questions, 90% of the time.
Connections Think about a book that you recently read. • Tell me a little bit about the book. • Did the book make you feel a certain way? • Did you like or dislike that book? • Do you know why the author wrote that book?
Four Corners • After you hear the passage and decide why the author wrote the passage. Then find the sign that also shows that reason. The signs are inform, describe, or answer. • I will read through 10 passages and you will move to the different signs after all ten passages. • If you are not sure why the author wrote the passage, move to the sign that you think is closest to why the author wrote it. • It is ok not to know, we will learn how to determine the author's purpose in our lesson today!
Opening • I will read the book, The monster who ate my peas to the class by Danny Schitzlein • As a class we will discuss: • Who are the characters? • What is the problem that Ralph (the little boy) is facing? • Who shows up to help Ralph with his peas? Humm? Well now that we know some about the book, but we still don’t really know why the author wrote the book. Let’s reread the book, looking at the problems that the characters face. Maybe this can help us decide why the author wrote the book.
Let’s Re-Read Before we reread: Break up into small groups of two or three people. Chose one person to be the writer. We are going to discuss some of the problems the character’s face in our small groups.
Ralph’s Mom First, let’s look at Ralph’s mom tries to convince him to eat the peas. The writer of the group will answer the following questions. 1. How does Ralph’s mom try to get him to eat the peas? 2. Does it work? Humm, well knowing why Ralph’s mom is upset, helps us to know one of the big problems in the book, but we still do not know why the author wrote the whole book. Let’s keep reading and maybe we will find some more clues.
The Monster! (He scares me) Second, let’s look at the monster. Discuss in your small group the questions below. Switch writers and let someone else write the answers to the questions. 3 . How does the monster convince him to let him help? 4. What does Ralph have to give up for the monsters help? 5. Is Ralph happy that the monster helped? Humm, well now I see how Ralph is trying to solve his problem, but it does not seem to be working and worse, the monster is taking his stuff as payment. However, this does give us another clue; Ralph knows he has a problem and wants to solve it.
Ralph’s Mom Reaction to his peas disappearing Third, let’s look at how Ralph’s mom reacts to him “eating” his peas. Switch writer role again. how does mom react when she sees Ralph has ate all his peas? Humm, well the peas being gone made Ralph’s mom happy. Ralph wants to make his mom happy, but he still will not eat the peas. Now we have some more clues. What do you think will happen next?
Ralph Tries the Peas!!! • Now let’s discuss Ralph trying the peas. Switch writer roles. • how does Ralph convince himself to eat the peas? • What does he discover? WOW! Ralph discovered that peas are not bad! In fact, he likes peas! That is our final clue! Now lets talk about why the author would write this book.

Conclusions • I think the author wrote this book to show us to try new things. Ralph did not like peas, so he never tried them, but when he did finally try them…. He saw he liked them. I think the author's purpose is to teach us a important lesson, to try new things! • Let’s look at the last page: • We see that Ralph now wants to try any food! • Is there any new thing that you are scared to try?
