Managing the Social Media accounts of the Seven Valleys Writing Project
When evaluating the group’s social media accounts, we noticed: • The Facebook account was liked by 52 different people, so there was an established following of the group on this social media website since 2008. • The Twitter account has been liked by 50 people, and was established in 2009. • A Tumblr account was created in 2011 but never followed by any of the group’s members or anyone at all.
Problems we saw with • Facebook • Twitter • Tumblr • Other social media outlets
Facebook • The site is very static, most of the postings are made by the leaders of the group and not by the group’s members • The activity on the Facebook page spikes during the Summer Writing Workshops, then returns back to its normal slow pace afterwards. • There isn’t much interactive content posted on the page, the members aren’t tagged in any of the conversations. • The mood of the page is very nonchalant, the group’s members rarely comment on a post. • The group’s postings are very spread out (the last posting was made on October 29th, and the last post made on the group’s page before that was September 23rd), and the members don’t seem very engaged or interested in the site (The Tumblr posts all have been viewed by at least 20 people, but none of them have been commented on or “liked”).
Twitter • Same basic content as Facebook. • Tweets aren’t being tagged by the author, re-tweeted by the group members, or “favorited” by the group members. • The Twitter account is only following 2 ACCOUNTS, and one of those is Google Calendar. (More accounts, obviously, need to be followed so that opportunity to follow back arises----increasing the audience of the group)
Tumblr • The original Tumblr account’s content: • _________________________ • _________________________ • _________________________ • _________________________ • _________________________ • _________________________
Tumblr Account problems cont. • We created a new Tumblr account for the group, but he has yet to master the art of tagging. For example: “#teaching schools writing Philadelphia Cyber School charter schools • An audience still hasn’t been sought out for Tumblr, and the group’s members haven’t been directed to the site which leads to further issues. • The group members now continue to get notifications on Facebook from postings made through Tumblr, but have no idea that a Tumblr site was created or how to access it.
7VWP Social Media: Main Problem • Brian Fay
7VWP Social Media: Main Problems cont. • Social Media accounts were created for the group (linkedin, Tumblr, blogspot) and subsequently left unused and un-developed. The existence of these unused platforms makes the group look unprofessional, disorganized, and appear inactive. • Ineffective tags • Minimal postings made to each account • There appears to be no active manager of the social media accounts. • An effective social media presence doesn’t seem to be a key priority to this non-profit organization, it seems to be more like an after-thought to the group.
What we can teach 7VWP to help them with their Social Media woes • How to tag posts effectively, if a tag doesn’t already exist, make one! • How to introduce new social media accounts to group members not familiar with the platform • How to get rid of unused sites • How to integrate more opportunities for interaction amongst the group • How to make the Social Media accounts more engaging to the viewer ( • How to establish a following for the group • How to increase the attendance of the Summer Workshops, a mainstay for the Group • How to utilize Social Media platforms to reach their goals and further their aspirations
