Agenda West Virginia Board of Education • The agenda is the mechanism by which the WVBE conducts business. • The agenda is developed by the WVDE with direction from the WVBE. • Building of the agenda begins at pre-board. Pre-board meets the Tuesday immediately following the regular monthly WVBE meeting. • Pre-board dates are set by the deputy superintendent and distributed to cabinet members. Cabinet members are designated by the state superintendent. • Items for placement on an agenda are presented at pre-board by cabinet members. • Please see your division chief (who is a cabinet member) or division secretary if you have questions and for additional instructions.
Agenda West Virginia Board of Education • To place an item on the WVBE agenda, you must complete a Board Agenda Item form. The form must then be emailed to the division secretary who will place the item in the designated folder on the W: drive. • If the agenda item requires an attachment, the attachment must be saved in portable document format (PDF) and emailed to the division secretary who will place the document in the designated folder on the W: drive. • Three copies of the attachment must also be given to the board secretary. All attachments should be copied front and back.
Policy West Virginia Board of Education • W. Va. Code §18-2-5 states, “Subject to and in conformity with the constitution and laws of this state, the state board of education shall exercise general supervision of the public schools of the state, and shall make rules . . .” • The WVBE establishes policies/rules to ensure the implementation of West Virginia’s education goals and the general supervision, oversight and monitoring of a thorough and efficient educational system. • Action regarding a WVBE policy is via the WVBE agenda. • Please visit the WVDE’s website at http://wvde.state.wv.us/policies/ and review the forms listed at the top of the page. The first step in the policy process is to place a policy on comment. Once the policy has completed the comment process it is brought back before the WVBE for approval. • Please see your division chief or division secretary if you have questions.
