While You’re Here Select three ideas that provoke your thinking Think-pair-share at end
Your Presenters Cheryl Cannon, Math Teacher NikiJaquish, English Teacher Philip Matthews, Science Teacher Nan Lanford, Library Media Specialist
Charting the Journey November 18, 2011 – Introduce NN January 31, 2012 – Introduce NGAs February 29, 2012 – “Collaborate” an NGA March 7, 2012 – Share model NGAs Implement NGAs in classrooms May 18, 2012 – Turn in student work, teacher and student reflections
Challenges • “This too shall pass.” (not!) • Teachers not comfortable with change • Work in collaborative groups or with a buddy • Befuddled by technology • Time, time, time!
Benefits • One-stop shopping for standards • 1,500 sample NGAs! • User-friendly platform • Bookshelf • Coach’s Advice for each step • “Collaborate” and “Recommend” features
Teacher Comments “NN can help me amp up some of my current lessons or at least evaluate if they are adequately rigorous.” “NN and CCS will force teachers to incorporate more performance-based assessments and to increase the rigor of instruction.” “I will understand CCS better as I use pre-designed lessons for ideas in my classroom.”

Library Media Specialist • LMS can help match MC resources that support classroom teachers’ needs • More informational texts • Identify text complexity • Understanding Lexilemeasures • Resources available • AASL/CCS crosswalk • Livebinder of CC resources for LMS
LMS can collaborate to design lessons for co-teaching alongside classroom teacher • AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner align with the CCS • These standards address higher order thinking which are the types of instruction LMS have been promoting • Sample NGA: Information Literacy and College/Career Research
What We’ve Learned Change is easier when you experience it with a buddy or collaborative team. Teachers respond better to change over time, but at some point there has to be a deadline. Some teachers confuse NGAs with hands-on activities and fail to amp up the rigor and/or the relevance. Patience is a virtue, but please come soon!
“Next” Steps Continue tiered training and support Challenge teachers to create one NGA per unit as culminating activity Make sure that ELA and Math teachers are aware of new rollouts from the consortium Ensure that teachers understand the importance of a whole-building initiative, esp. literacy for ALL
