  1. Plans for EUMETSAT’s Third Generation Meteosat (MTG) Geostationary Satellite Program G. Fowler and R. Stuhlmann

  2. Time Planning: Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) • 2015: NOMINAL NEED DATE FOR MTG • 2009-2014 : MTG PHASE C/D DEVELOPMENT/ON-GROUND TEST OF MTG SYSTEM • 2007-2009: MTG PHASE B PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF SELECTED MISSION CONCEPT • (APPROVAL PROCESSES: MTG PROGRAMMES - ESA & EUMETSAT) • 2005-2007: MTG PHASE A DETAILED STUDIES FOR PRE-SELECTED MISSION CONCEPTS (APPROVAL PROCESSES: MTG PREPARATORY-PROGRAMMES - ESA & EUMETSAT) • 2001-2005: MTG PHASE 0 “USER CONSULTATION PROCESS” & PRE-PHASE A STUDIES • 2004 - 2005 PHASE 2: PRE-PHASE A STUDIES, EVALUATION/PRE-SELECTION OF MISSION CONCEPT (APPROVAL PROCESSES: PROSPECTIVE SATELLITES ACTIVITIES - EUMETSAT) • 2001 - 2004: PHASE 1: HIGH LEVEL USER NEEDS & PRIORITIES AGREED, PREPARATION OF PRE- PHASE A STUDIES

  3. Assessment of observing techniques High level user requirements Lower level user requirements Requirements & Logic Documents Strategy documents Customer Strategies NMSs & ECMWF AEG Position Papers (maintained) User Needs & Priorities Application Expert Groups - observations/information - non observational Selected/relevant observing techniques Lower level user requirts RS Experts Mission Teams (Remote Sensing & Application Experts) High level user requirements for selected techniques MTG Mission Requirements (MRD) Traceability Driver or input

  4. MTG Missions • Based on the assessment of observing techniques, five candidate observation • missions identified for MTG • Three distinct imagery missions dedicated to operational meteorology, with emphasis on nowcasting and very short term forecasting: • The High Resolution Fast Imagery (HRFI) mission, enhancement of the MSG HRI mission; • The Full Disk High Spectral resolution Imagery (FDHSI) mission, successor to the MSG SEVIRI mission; • The Lightning Imagery (LI) mission; • An Infrared Sounding (IRS) mission focussed on operational meteorology, with some potential relevance to atmospheric chemistry; • An UV/Visible sounding (UVS) mission dedicated to atmospheric chemistry

  5. High Resolution Fast Imagery (HRFI)Mission Coverage Repeat cycle Local Area Cov. 18ox6o 5 min ‘Rapid Scan’ 6ox6o < 5 min Successor of MSG HRV specified to meet the requirements for ‘information on rapid development phenomena’ 0.5 km 1 km

  6. High Resolution Fast Imagery (HRFI)Mission Under review Spatial resolution at SSP: 0.5 km - 1.0 km

  7. Full Disk High Spectral Resolution Imagery (FDHSI)Mission Coverage Repeat cycle Full Disk Coverage 18ox18o 10 min Local Area Cov. 18ox6o < 10 min Successor to remaining SEVIRI mission specified to meet the requirements for ‘quantitative information’ 1 km 3 km

  8. Full Disk High Spectral Resolution Imagery (FDHSI)Mission MSG heritage New Channels Options *Channels FD-IR 13.0/ FD-IR 13.9 will be discarded if option FD-OPT 2 is selected.

  9. FDHSI Mission Optional Channels for cloud top height determination by differential absorption in the oxygen A-Band for cloud top height determination by CO2-slicing in the 14µm CO2 band for fire monitoring application

  10. Infra Red Sounding (IRS)Mission Coverage Repeat cycle Full Disk Coverage 18ox18o 30 min Local Area Cov. 18ox6o 10 min IE = 0.7 @ DX = 6km IE = 0.7 @ DX = 3km

  11. IRS: Synchronous Imaging Requirements Imagery mission Sounder In built Imager Relaxed time co-registration requirement Good co-registration in time/ good correlation Easy to correlate • Limited number of channels • VIS-0.6 • IR-3.8 • IR-11.4 • High spatial resolution Larger number of channels Information on scene content in sounder pixel General information on characterisation of scene Need:

  12. Lightning Imaging (LI)Mission

  13. UV-VIS Sounding (UVS) Mission Coverage Repeat cycle Nominal 18o NSx6o EW 30 min Special 6ox6o 10 min UVS no direct MSG heritage but from user point of view related to ERS, EPS GOME, ENVISAT SCIAMACHY designed to capture regional, diurnal and sporadic behaviour due to biological, photochemical, and even volcanic factors (placed variable - follow sun illumination) IE = 0.7 @ DX = 6km

  14. UV-VIS Sounding (UVS) Mission Polarisation measurement - possibility left to Industry
