  3. Why bother with a Corporate Image Policy? Corporate image policy exists in all major organisations. It helps to reinforcethecorporate brand and ensure that the corporate logo is both used and appliedcorrectly. One of the key strategic goals of the Students’ Union is to communicatethe activities that we are involved in to our membership. The flexibility and consistency within the new identity allows this to happen easily and effectively.However, in order to utilise the impact of the new logo it is important that it isused correctly. This PowerPoint presentation explains the correct use of the logo. If you have anyadditional questions about the use of the logos please ask any of the managers orconsult the Marketing Department.

  4. What is a Publication? For the purpose of this policy, a publication shall be defined as: Anything Written or Printed Presentations Leaflets, flyers and posters Powerpoint templates Label magazine, handbooks and other publications Handouts Reports to the University and other external bodies Slides Minutes, Agendas and notice of meetings Video Letters, memos, compliment slips and business cards Policy Documents Forms Electronic Communications Websites E-mails Signs and NoticesFaxes Permanent Temporary

  5. Examples of Logo abuse Placed on a white background and stamped… Wrong logo for background colour... No ‘swoosh’... Sectional logo used independently... Logo use should be considered in design stage... Stretched and out of proportion...

Approved Logos • The Union logo has 4 different categories of application: • The Main Union logo: • Used as a generic logo by any Union department • Mother/Child relationship: • Used by Ents, Shops, Bars, Advice and Media • Brother/Sister relationship: • Used by Action, RAG, AU and the Nursery • Brand relationship: • Used by Label, LCR and Aura. • These will be discussed in more detail on the following slides

  7. The Main Union Logo This logo must only appear when represented in full. Ie. With the ‘swoosh’ and the text. It is to be used only on dark backgrounds. The ‘swoosh’ can only be used in isolation with prior permission from the Union Treasurer. Main Union: Negative This logo must only appear when represented in full. Ie. With the ‘swoosh’ and the text. It is to be used only on light backgrounds. The ‘swoosh’ can only be used in isolation with prior permission from the Union Treasurer. Main Union: Colour This logo must only appear when represented in full. Ie. With the ‘swoosh’ and the text. It is to be used only on light backgrounds.   10. Brother/Sister - Secondary Logo The ‘secondary logo’ can only be used in exceptional circumstances and with prior permission from the Union Treasurer. It consists of only the ‘swoosh’ and secondary icon appearing in equal prominence. It is to be used only on dark backgrounds. Secondary: Negative The ‘secondary logo’ can only be used in exceptional circumstances and with prior permission from the Union Treasurer. It consists of only the ‘swoosh’ and secondary icon appearing in equal prominence. It is to be used only on dark backgrounds. Secondary: Colour The ‘secondary logo’ can only be used in exceptional circumstances and with prior permission from the Union Treasurer.   11. Brand Relationships Each brand has its own individual logo. These logos shall appear in equal prominence with the logo of the Union Department that owns the brand. Under no circumstance should the brand logo appear independently. Brand: Negative Each brand has its own individual logo. Brand: Colour The brand logo can also be used in its Mono application. It just will not fit on this slide!

  12. Equal Prominence Equal Prominence suggests that the secondary logos should not only be the same size, they should also appear in a similar position on the page. These are examples of the logos being used correctly and in equal prominence.

  13. Not Equal Prominence! When one logo appears at the top of a page and the other is pushed to the bottom, equal prominence is not being maintained. These are examples of logos being used incorrectly, not in equal prominence.

  17. Photocopying the logos Whenever a publication is going to be photocopied or printed in greyscale before it is presented, it is important that the ‘Mono’ logo is used. This is to prevent the logo looking untidy when reproduced. This particularly applies to minutes, agendas and reports.

  18. The ‘swoosh’ is transparent The ‘swoosh’ in the logo is not white, it is transparent. When a logo appears on a coloured background the ‘swoosh’ is made transparent and adopts the background colour. Therefore, when a logo appears on a yellow piece of paper, the Mono logo is used and ‘swoosh’ is yellow.

  19. Size of logo on publication In order to have a reasonable prominence on a publication, the logo should have a surface area about 1/20th of the publication. This is a fairly standard size for many corporate logos.

  20. All logos must appear in stated proportions When the logos are enlarged or reduced, they must not be stretched, shrunk or have their proportions altered in any way. CORRECT PROPORTIONS! STRETCHED... STRETCHED...... SQUASHED...

  21. Distance between logo and text There should be a reasonable sized border around the entire logo that is free from text. This is to prevent the logo becoming customised to specific events.   22. Must be used ‘right way up’ The logo must always be used the correct way up so that the text can be clearly read. Therefore, they should appear horizontally rather than vertically. CORRECT INCORRECT INCORRECT

  23. Logos appear on the front of publications The logo must appear on the front of publications. This is particularly applicable to flyers and leaflets. When the flyer is ‘double sided’ the logo should appear on each side.

  24. Promoting the website Raising the profile of the Union website is another key strategic aims of the Students’ Union. It is therefore very important to promote our web address wherever possible. Therefore, the relevant URL should appear on every Union publication. Note the top left hand corner of this presentation!
