Terms and Conditions • WBHS learning chocolates are and shall remain the property of WBHS Limited and have no cash redemption value, are not for resale and must be consumed in the UK only. Ensure you agree with all terms and conditions before consumption. Customers must be 16 years or over to consume confectionary bribes. The chocolate is for personal use only and cannot be exchanged for cash, snorted or used as novelty head wear without prior written consent. In consuming this chocolate the consumer hereby agrees to complete all homework by the date that shall be agreed by the classroom teacher. Copied, damaged or defaced homework will not be accepted. Power in Written Texts • You have seven minutes to underline every use of the following in different colours. • Declarative sentences • Imperative sentences • Modal verbs • Use of the verb to be • Legalese • Formal language (including lack of contractions) • Archaic language
Power in Written Texts For each language feature you have annotated, note how it conveys power. Eg. all but two of the sentences are declarative which signals authority and lack of ambiguity. This reflects the fact that terms and conditions outline a legal position and must be crystal clear and impossible to circumvent. The authoritative tone shows that the document has the force of the law behind it.
Modality – Glossaries Ready • Epistemic modality - express degrees of possibility, probability or certainty. Could, might, will etc. • Deontic modality – express degrees of necessity and obligation. Must, should etc.
Powerful Language • In your group make a list of all the features of written language which could convey power. Don’t share your ideas with other groups – this is a competition. Rally Robin
You have the power… • Using the lexis and grammar features we have identified, write your own set of terms and conditions for anything you like… • It could be the conditions for borrowing something that belongs to you, being your friend… Remember to use as many features of powerful written language as you can.
