Promoting Energy Sustainability Eng. Michaela Camilleri 28th March 2011
Mission Statement To meet the energy needs and expectations of the customer in a safe, efficient and profitable manner whilst safeguarding the environment Delimara • Marsa Power station dating back to early 1950’s: Capacity (247MW) • Delimara Power station commissioned between 1992 and 1998: Capacity (304MW) • New Diesel Plant in 2012 • Cable Interconnector to Sicily (200MW) in 2013 Marsa • Small isolated system • Vertically integrated • 1,400 electricity related employees • 100% Government owned • Fuel oil dependency
Corporation’s Role in Energy Sustainability • Identifying opportunities for energy conservation • Investing in efficient and energy saving technologies • Promoting alternative sources of energy - RES pilot projects - Dissemination of information to the public
Aims behind RES pilot projects • Demonstrate RES technologies to the general public • 2. Collect and disseminate information (ambient temp, cell temp, solar irradiation, wind speed) about small RE systems to Consumers, Researchers, Regulator. • 3. To show Enemalta’s commitment towards promoting renewable sources of energy locally.
RES pilot projects PV systems Kappara : 3kWp Qawra : 4.2kWp Luqa : 9.7kWp Micro Wind Turbine Armier: 2.5kWp
RES pilot projects : Results • OUR PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS: • The PV systems have yielded approximately 1550kWh/kWp/year • The capacity factor for the PV systems has been c.17.5%. • OUR WIND SYSTEM: • The MWT system has yielded approximately 990kWh/kW/year • The capacity factor for the MWT system has been c.11.3% (very site specific). • Real time data (ex. hourly, daily & monthly yield; annual comparison) is regularly being posted on Enemalta Corporation’s Website under Clean Energy Initiatives : www.enemalta.com.mt
Initiatives in Street Lighting • Street Lighting Dimming • A number of trial tests were conducted using different technologies.Dimming devices reduce the luminous intensity to a preset value, for a period of time (ex. 11pm to 6am) and from information collected during trial tests there is a potential saving of up to 35%. No negative feedback was received from the general public. • Best Case Scenario for all Street Lighting in Malta (40,000 lamps consuming 19,500 MWh/year) and based on 7 hours dimming at 35% reduction (maximum) in power consumption: • Energy Saving per Year : 4,000MWh • Reduction in CO2 emissions per Year: 3,500MT/annum • Cost of electricity savings (€) based on marginal cost of generation based on fuel cost only (€0.115/kWh): € 460,000
Internal Initiatives • Light Audit - was carried out for the Administration Building, Marsa & Delimara Power Station Buildings. The scope of this exercise was to identify those luminaries which have potential cost benefit if we had to change to new energy saving lights. • Retrofitting existing T8 fluorescent tubes with Energy saving T5 System - Based onfrom results of light audit T5 tubes were replaced and the following savings were made: • Electricity Financial Savings per Annum averaged to Euro 16,000. • Average % reduction in Electricity Consumption of 42%. • Annual Saving in CO2 Emissions estimated to be 168MT. • Average Payback of 1.3 years.
Internal Initiatives • Energy Saving in Air-conditioning Cooling by Retrofitting Solar Film to Windows • Passive form of energy conservation in buildings • Solar Film can reject up to 75% of the total solar energy and 98% UV • Installed in MPS & DPS Administration Buildings for South facing windows
Internal Initiatives • Other initiatives: • Energy saving in washrooms and low occupancy rooms in station by installation of timers and use of motion detectors and PIRs for lighting systems. • Motors are being replaced with the most energy efficient type (class EFF1) • Increased use of variable speed drives of motors and pumps • Investigating LED technology for street lighting
Dissemination of information • For Households: • FAQs on Energy Saving & FAQs on Renewable Energy • Energy Calculator – By entering the quantity, power consumption, and usage frequency of the relevant appliances used, one can estimate the energy consumed in a year. The calculator comes preloaded with a list of commonly used appliances, their typical consumption values and usage frequency. The tool will recommend and alternative appliance if a non energy efficient one is selected (Ex. If a Class C Air conditioner is selected a Class A is recommended showing you also how much units you could save in one year) • This information is posted on Enemalta Corporation’s Website.
Dissemination of information A presentation on “Energy Saving Measures in Households” was delivered to a number of institutions in the past three years for the scope of educating the public with basic tips and measures for improving energy efficiency in households.
Environment • Enemalta is currently implementing an EMS to become ISO 14001 certified in its generation and distribution sections • In its policy EMC is committed to reduce the total energy consumed and reduce distribution losses
