Why a new Strategic Plan for CATIE? • Formal justification: end of SP 2003-2012 • Actual justifications: • Significant changes in the global and regional context over the last decade • Major incidence of climate change (climate variability) • Major shift in funding leading to an organizational dilemma: change by design (re-engineering) or change by force.
Adjusting Our Mandate MISSION • Achieve sustainable and inclusive human wellbeing through education, research and innovation for development, promoting the sustainable management of agriculture and natural resources and the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services in territories of Latin America and the Caribbean.
VISION • Consolidate CATIE as an international organization of excellence integrating education, research and innovation for sustainable and inclusive human wellbeing in partnership with multiple partners and countries.
STRATEGY • Promote the development of climate-smart territories (CST) as a mean to achieve sustainable and inclusive human wellbeing integrating education, research and innovation for development activities in partnership with multiple partners and countries.
Objectives Central Strategic Objective • Develop integrated and systemic solutions to achieve rapid progress towards the establishment of climate smart territories in different areas of the CATIE mandate region
Climate-smart territories • Climate-smart territories are geographical and social spaces in which all ecosystem services are maintained or restored, improving the wellbeing of the local population, while continuously optimizing mitigation and adaptation to climate change.
