Climate of the desert • A desert is a place where little or no rain falls. Scientists define a desert as a land with less than 25cm of rainfall a year. The climate is either too hot or too cold for animal life. Most deserts are stony or rocky.
Rattle Snakes • It can slither through grass or among rocks without causing disturbance that might frighten prey. • It has forked tongues. • Flexible Jaws.
Camels • Camels have long eyelashes which keep sand out of there eyes. • Camels have wide feet which make it easier to walk on sand. • Camouflaged • Camels have nostrils which open and close to keep sand out.
Bobcat • Camouflaged. • Hunting ability. • Very fierce and can kill animals as large as deer.
Barrel Cactus • Sharp spines • Man sized
Brittle Bush • The leaves are covered with a thick mat of short hairs giving a gray-green appearance.
Desert Ironwood • One of the longest living trees, reaching heights of 30 feet. • Provides desert plants and animals with the food and shelter they need to survive.
Human Activities • Humans hunted, farmed and lived in the desert. Also humans like to go with cars and also they go with beach buggies especially in the middle east where falconry is commonl
Good or Bad? • Many types of human activities hurt the desert. Many people drive their cars or vehicles in unrestricted areas all over the desert. Their vehicles leave tracks on the soil, which will mark the land for decades. These tracks also kill vegetation. When vegetation is harmed, so are the animals. Animals that hide in the sand can also be harmed by vehicles which step on the animals. The sand viper, which hides so well in the soil, can become an accidental victim of off roading mayhem.
