Rise of Nationalism • Countries began to feel proud of their nationalities. • Russia helped Greece gain its independence from the Ottoman Empire. • Italy joined separate states together as onenation. • Bismarck unified Germany under Prussian rule. Germany took Austria and parts of France. This became an empire under Kaiser William I of Prussia.

  4. Big changes from 1850-1900!

  5. Imperialism: Colonization of Africa • Natural resources – diamonds, gold, rubber, ivory, etc. European factories required a lot of natural resources. • Until 1875, Europe controlled 10% of Africa. • 20 years later, they controlled 90%! • Nationalism encouraged this- creating a larger and stronger empire!!! • It became known as the “Scramble for Africa”- to grab colonies for wealth and prestige.

  9. The British Empire in 1905:“The Sun never sets on the British Empire”- They owned 25% of the world!

  13. Militarism • How did they protect their new empires? • Governments concentrated on arming and protecting their countries and colonies. • Because of the Industrial revolution, new technologies were developed that created more advanced weaponry. • Poison gas • Tanks • Machine guns • Airplanes • Submarines

  14. Alliances • Alliances were agreements between countries to come to each others aid if they were attacked. • Many different ones occurred between 1879- 1907 • The Dual Alliance – 1879 (Austria and Germany) • The Austro-Serbian Alliance – 1881 (Austria and Serbia) • The Triple Alliance – 1882 (Germany, Austria and Italy) • Franco- Russian Alliance – 1894 (Russia and France) • Entente Cordiale – 1904 (Britain and France) • The Triple Entente – 1907 (Britain, France and Russia)

  15. New Alliances • By 1914, the five strongest countries in Europe had split into 2 rival groups: • Great Britain, France and Russia – the Allies. • Germany and Austria-Hungary – the Central Powers. • The situation became very tense.

  16. The Last Straw • Just as all of this was causing tempers to flare, a small group of men decided it was time to assassinate Austrian Archduke Ferdinand while on a trip to Serbia. • And so, THEY DID!

  17. As a result… • Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. • Russia declared war on Austria because they were allies. • Germany declared war on Russia because they were allies. • And the game continued until a 2 country war became a WorldWar!!!
