  1. Caterpillars By: Gina Pompa

  2. Caterpillars • They make ideal pets. It is a lot of fun to watch them grow and change. • Caterpillars are the larvae of butterflies and moths. • They need plenty of fresh food, fresh air and the right amount of moisture. Larvae: plural of larva Larva: also known as caterpillar, wingless often wormlike form.

  3. Life Cycle • Butterflies undergo complete metamorphosis meaning they have 4 life stages: • Egg • Larva (caterpillar) • Pupa (chrysalis) • Adult • Metamorphosis: a process in which an animal physically develops after birth or hatching. • A profound change in form from one stage to another.

  4. Life Cycle

  5. Stage One • Egg • Female butterflies can lay from a couple of dozen to 1500 or more eggs. • The Painted Lady lays its eggs on plants. One type of plant they prefer is the malva plant. • The eggs are green and shaped like an oval. They are about 1 mm large. After the egg emerges it sometimes eats the home it has just left. • Most hatch within 5 to 10 days

  6. Stage Two • Caterpillar (larva) • The caterpillar eats to grow • The outer skin cannot grow so the caterpillar must shed its skin periodically • When the caterpillar grows too large for its skin, the skin splits up the back and the caterpillar re-emerges.

  7. Stage Three • Chrysalis (pupa) • The caterpillar crawls to a safe place and hangs upside down from a branch or leaf. The larvae spins thread and attaches its tail to its resting place. • Then it hardens • This casing protects the life inside. • The Painted Lady stays in this state for 7 to 10 days.

  8. Stage Four • Adult • When the chrysalis splits and releases the butterfly, air is pumped into the wings, filling them with blood and unfolding them. • The wings dry and harden within the first day. Veins on the wings give them strength. • The painted Lady has orange, white, brown, and black colors on the top wing and white, brown, tan, black, blue, and purple colors on the bottom part of the wings.

  9. Review • Egg:Eggs from different butterflies are different shapes and sizes. The caterpillars hatch from the eggs about 5 days later. • Caterpillar (larva): Each time the caterpillar grows, it needs to shed its old skin or molt. They usually molt 5 times. After a few weeks the caterpillar stops eating and growing and looks for a place to change. • Chrysalis (pupa):The caterpillar sheds its skin for the last time and becomes a pupa. The pupa stays inside a hard shell called a chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis, the pupa is changingfrom a caterpillar's body to a butterfly's body. • Adult:The adult butterfly emerges from the chrysalisafter several weeks.

  10. Activity • Complete the life cycle map • Get your own caterpillar • Start working on your journal
