Problem: P4 : Will the liquids: water, and oil effect how long it will take for the kernel to pop? • P5: Which cup of popcorn kernels will pop the loudest/fastest/slowest on the hotplate? Control: dry kernels Variables: kernels in oil, kernels soaked in water • P6: What way can popcorn pop the fastest in plain, oil, or water? • Gather Information: Popcorn, Science Fusion pg 8, through our experiences or other experiments, bags of popcorn, book-popcorn, water, oil, Explanation of how popcorn pops, heat, evaporation, time it takes to pop, height of popping, will one pop effect another pop, and dryness of kernel. • Materials: popcorn kernels, hot plate, 100ml beaker, oil, water, cups, timer, recording tools • Hypothesis: What you believe will happen based off of the problem? Use If… then… or I predict… Explain WHY with both! • Procedure: • Review all safety procedures before beginning. Have materials set up and ready to use. • Place kernels from the same cob equally in three different cubs. • Cup one contains only kernels • Cup two contains ¼ cup water • Cup three contains ¼ cup oil • Allow to sit for 12 hours • Turn on burner with small beaker of water to create a stable temperature. • Place three kernels of corn from cup one in beaker. Place beaker on burner and start timer – record when each kernel pops. Immediately after all kernels have popped remove from burner onto cooling rack. Continue experiment in the same manner with cup two then cup three. “Pop”cornProcedures Content: Work as a team to accomplish your objective.Vocab: Teamwork Social: Cooperation
Procedure:1. Review all safety procedures before beginning. Have materials set up and ready to use. Have Goggles!2. Place kernels from the same cob equally in three different cups.a. Cup one contains only kernelsb. Cup two contains ¼ cup waterc. Cup three contains ¼ cup oild. Allow to sit for 2 days 3. Turn on burner with small beaker of water to create a stable temperature.4. Place three kernels of corn from cup one in beaker. Place beaker on burner and continually spin in a clockwise direction. Immediately start timer – record when each kernel pops. Immediately after all kernels have popped remove from burner onto cooling rack. Continue experiment in the same manner with cup two then cup three (dry on towel from liquid) .If it starts smoking a lot abort experiment
Testable Question:A measureable question that you can test by doing an experiment (can be creative) Questions such as (Which? and What if?) and find out a factual answer by using the scientific method. Need to get same results over several trials.
Testable Question:A measureable question that is able to be experimented on proving definite factual answers (with no opinions) . Tested over and over again with same results.
