  2. English classes open to 9th grade students: • 9th grade English • 9th grade honors English

  3. English electives open to 9th grade students: • 9th grade Drama • Annual—application and instructor approval (applications available at 8th grade Activity Fair March 24th, OHS Commons, 6:30-7:30 pm)

  4. Recommendations for 9th honors English • Have passed 7th grade WASL in reading and writing (level 4 recommended) • Have a reading percentile score of 88% or higher on the OLYALT or any other standardized test • Be a self-motivated, self-directed learner who is interested in more than just facts, grades, and “the right answer.”

  5. Have an attitude that fosters respectful communication • Be able to handle criticism to help him/her learn and grow • Feel comfortable in a class of high achievers who push themselves academically • Attend class consistently and turn in all assignments on time

  6. Finally, students and their parents should think about the balance in their lives overall—between school, sports, music, family, etc.

Work Expectations for 9th grade honors English • Students should expect an average of ½ hour/night of homework, which fluctuates up to an hour in second semester • Reading assignments can be up to 30-40 pages/night • Honors English emphasizes literary analysis to prepare students for AP classes • Overall, the class moves at a faster pace
