Hot tips for ESOL • Avoid deficit thinking. • Know your students and take an interest in them. • Support and encourage the first language. • Make links to their prior learning, and where necessary, build prior knowledge. • Identify both content and language outcomes in the lessons. • Vocabulary, vocabulary, vocabulary. • Give ELLs the opportunity to prepare for lessons in advance. • Scaffold, and give multiple opportunities to learn- including speaking opportunities. • Integrate with kiwi kids in activities.
