July and August are here, pounding us with their heat and humidity. So just to feel a little breeze, we shall go back to those beautiful days of winter and spring 2003 in Israel.

21 בדצמבר 2002 – השיטפונות בנגב הצפוני ובמדבר יהודה. כאן הכל מתחיל... כמה תמונות נארזות במצגת, שנשלחת לכמה חברים באימייל. תוך כמה ימים המצגת "עושה גלים" ברשת, והחורף – אף הוא עושה את שלו. The Presentations saga begins with the early winter floods in the Negev – December 21st 2002. The “Negev Floods” presentation spreads from email to email on the Internet, while the winter plays his part too...

ככה נראה המכתש הגדול באותו יום שטוף מים This is how “Makhtesh Gadol” (One of the three craters – Makhteshim of the Negev) looked like while its main river was flooded. וככה הוא נראה בדרך כלל... But don’t be fooled by the sight – it is usually dry like here (but always colorful that is to say !)

And several rainy days in January brought a surprising flow of water alongside one of the Carmel mountains roads. וכמה ימים גשומים בינואר הביאו עמם זרימת מים מרשימה אפילו לאורך אחד מכבישי הכרמל

The Carmel National Park was blessed with water, as in this river – “Nahal Bustan”, which is usually dry. ולא רק לאורך הכבישים, אלא גם באפיק היפהפה של נחל בוסתן בפארק הכרמל

חודש פברואר 2003 הביא אתו לצפון כמויות גשם שלא נראו בארץ כבר שנים רבות. בשיא הזרימה עלתה הכינרת בחצי סנטימטר בכל שעה ! המפלים במורדות הגולן זרמו בשצף, ובמיוחד מפל עורבים – שזורם בעיקר באירועי גשם חזקים. February 2003 turned out as one of the rainiest months in Israel for many years. Northern parts of the country got hundreds of millimeters of rain, and the waterfalls were gushing with water.This is one of them – “Orvim” waterfall, on the western slopes of the Golan.

לפרות הייתה חגיגה של עשב, ויחד עם ענני החורף העסיסיים נראו חלקים של עמק החולה כמו לקוחים מתוך גלוית נוף שצולמה בהרי האלפים באירופה. The cows had a very juicy time. Their sight, under the cloudy skies of “Hahula” valley, looked like a picture taken in the European Alps.

We don’t see here such a double rainbow so often, so it was worth leaving my tuna sandwich lunch and rushing to take the picture.It was on the Northern Galilee, on road 99. קשת כפולה עזה כזאת לא רואים כל יום, ובטח שלא בזמן ובמקום שנוחים לצילום. אמנם נאלצתי לעזוב את הלחמנייה עם הטונה ולרוץ לצלם, אבל המאמץ היה שווה.התמונה צולמה בכביש 99 ליד החניון שנושק לנהר חצבני.

גם השלג לא אכזב השנה. בזכות תפוצת המצגות זכיתי לאירוח משובח אצל משפחת רז במבשרת ציון (תמורת עבודות רס"ר של חורף בסגנון ניקוי צלחת הלווין מהשלג). וכך יצא לי לראות את מראות סופת השלג, כפי שנראתה למשל כאן - למרגלות ה"קסטל". The presentations circulation led to a fantastic hospitality with the Raz family in Mevaseret Tzion (with me helping with the house hold snow-related works) on the big snow event in Judea mountains and Jerusalem.

Touring Jerusalem on February 26th 2003 was a unique experience. Jerusalem is always charming, but add the snow factor – and it’s really amazing. Here is “Migdal David”. גולת הכותרת הייתה כמובן שיטוט בירושלים המושלגת, בתאריך 26 בפברואר 2003. ירושלים יפה ומרגשת תמיד, אבל על אחת כמה וכמה כשאתריה מקושטים בפלומה לבנה, כמו למשל כאן על מגדל דוד.

בהתחשב בעובדה שרוב הירושלמים העדיפו לבלות את היום בבית , ניתן היה לצפות שאפשר יהיה לשם שינוי למצוא חניה במרכז העיר. ליד "אכסניית סרגיי" הצטברו ערמות שלג ענקיות, ואלה ושכמותן חסמו כל אפשרות למצוא חנייה במגרשים העמוסים בפתיתים. Although most people stayed at home, finding a parking place was a demanding task in snowy Jerusalem, as snow covered all parking spaces, like these piles near the former Sergeii Hostel.

זוהי תמונה שלא נכללה במצגת ירושלים, שכן באותה עת הצנזורה המשטרתית לא התירה לחשוף את המצולם בה.כאן, בסקופ בלעדי נראה איש השלג הרשמי של תחנת המשטרה במגרש הרוסים. שימו לב שבסיוע אקדחו שבנרתיק הוא נכון לסכל כל פיגוע, לרבות השלכת כדורי שלג בשבת. This picture is released to the public only now, uncovering the latest police weapon – the snow policeman. As you can see he is well equipped to fight any terror event and even snow balls attack during “Shabes”.

The “White tour in Jerusalem” presentation was ended with this photo of the place where history, cultures, politics and more meet – Wailing Wall square, the Temple Mount and the Dome of the Rock. פרק השלג הירושלמי נחתם במראה עוטה לבן ושלווה של המקום בו נפגשים היסטוריה, תרבויות, פוליטיקה, ומה לא – רחבת הכותל, הר הבית וכיפת הסלע.

A few hours drive up north takes us to the volcanic hills of the Golan, covered with thick layer of snow. ועדיין בענייני שלג דתשס"ג (שבחום הנוכחי באמת נראה כבר כמו שלג דאשתקד) – והפעם על תילי רמת הגולן, בתמונה שלא הופיעה עדיין במצגות.

חודש מרץ היה בסימן ירוק מלוא העין, כמו כאן באזור רוחמה בואכה הנגב, עם ענן נוצה ממש כמו בספרים. By March the green sights were everywhere, such as here in the wheat fields near Ruhama, on the northern Negev.

The blooming this year was astonishing. This is the Cyclamen, taken from a low angle, expressing its majestic appearance. את ההצגה גנבה כמובן הפריחה המופלאה. את הרקפות צילמתי מזווית נמוכה במיוחד, והן נראות מלכותיות מתמיד.

This red shining dude is called the Pheasant’s Eye. מבין האדומים, בלטה הדמוּמית בפרחים גדולים במיוחד.

את הצמח הזה לא רואים כל יום. מוצאים אותו בצפון מדבר יהודה, אבל השנה לכבוד ריבוי הגשמים הוא קיבל את פני הבאים באזור נחל ערוגות. שמו בישראל צמרוּרָת בוּאסייה. This one looks as if it was taken from “Little Shop of Horrors”. It was actually seen in Judea Desert, and known as the Borage.

קצת מפתיע אולי, אבל הפרח העדין הזה שייך דווקא לצבר, ויהפוך אחר כך ל"סברס" קוצני במיוחד. אז לא סתם זה סמל הישראלי – נולד רך כמו כולם, וגדל להיות מחוספס ודוקרני. This delicate flower belongs to the “Sabra”. Its next phase is a juicy but thorny fruit – no wonder this plant symbolizes the Israeli character...

הרי אילת אמנם לא זכו השנה ליחס מצד העננים, אבל הוקדשה להם מצגת שלמה. זהו אחד האזורים ההרריים היפים והמעניינים בארץ – חגיגה של סלעים, צבעים, צוקים וקניונים. One of the most impressive mountainous regions in Israel is “Eilat Mountains” – found just near the resort town Eilat. A celebration of rocks, colors, canyons and cliffs.

ואם כבר לטייל במדבר, אז אפשר גם בלילה, במיוחד בגבעות החוואר של נחל חווארים הבוהקות באור הירח. In another part of the Negev, “Nahal Havarim” is ideal for hiking in the night, when its rock formations seem bright in the moonlight.

ואם כבר לילה, אז הנה משהו ממצגת הלילה – ה"סיטי" של רמת גן ונתיבי איילון צפון Speaking of nights – here’s an urban version of the night – the “city” of Ramat-Gan and Ayalon highways

זהו, אלה היו קטעים נבחרים ממצגות החורף-אביב, שגם הן היו טעימה על קצה המזלג של מראות ישראל השנה. ומה מצפה בעונה הבאה ?? מי שעקב אחרי תפוצת המצגות גילה בודאי שעד כה התחמקתי מלהפיץ את מצגת הסחלבים. ובכן - היא בוא תבוא, משודרגת גם עם דבורניות. זאת ועוד ... So this was a tiny taste of the sights seen here in Israel in the past winter and spring. Next season we’re going to meet the Orchids and Ophryses of Israel, among other presentations...
