SINDH BUREAU OF STATISTICS Introduction Bureau of Statistics was established in the year 1970 as an attached office of the Planning & Development Department, with the aim of collection, compilation, and dissemination of statistical data for the use of planners, policy makers, administrators and researchers.

Area & Production Estimates of Major and Minor Crops: Area & Production Estimates of Major and Minor Crops are prepared by the staff of Directorate of Agriculture Extension, Hyderabad as under: Wheat, Cotton & Rice: • Through sample/crop cutting surveys Sugar: • Farmer’s opinion survey Other Crops: • Area figure is collected from Board of Revenue whereas Production is estimated on subjective judgment basis by their field staff. These crop estimates are checked/examined and discussed by the sub-committee constituted in Agriculture Department, comprising representative of Agriculture, Irrigation Department, Board of Revenue and Bureau of Statistics. Thereafter these estimates are reviewed, considered and cleared in the meeting of Sindh Agricultural Statistics Coordination Board, head by Addition Chief Secretary, P&D Department alongwith other information available on fertilizer, pesticides, rainfall, water availability and agriculture credit. Agriculture Sector Methodology: Crop Acreage: Census of Crop Acreage is conducted by the field staff of Bureau of Statistics through Revenue Tapedar, in all about 6000 dehs for Kharif and Rabi seasons. Deh-wise crop acreage specific proforma filled-in by the Patwari/ Tapedar are collected by the field staff of Bureau of Statistics. These returns are checked, edited, coded and processed on computer and finally Rabi and Kharif Statistics are released for the users.
Agriculture Sector Methodology: • Land Utilization: Statistics are compiled by the field staff of Directorate of Agriculture Extension Hyderabad on the basis of District-wise information collected from Board of Revenue Sindh and supplied to this Bureau. • Others: Data on Climate, Fertilizer, Pesticides, Canal Withdrawal, Commanded Area, Fisheries, Livestock, Forestry, Farm Size, Tube wells etc. are collected by Bureau of Statistics from various organization/agencies which are compiled and disseminated through various publications of Bureau.

Products • Paint & Varnish Monthly Industrial Production & Employment data in respect of 96 items manufactured by 31 selected large scale industries is collected by Bureau of Statistics through mail, fax, telephonic contacts and personal visits from about 500 establishments every month. Data collected from factories is checked, edited/coded and processed on computer. Results of the survey are finalized within time lag of six weeks and report is released for the users. Future Work Plan • To strengthen statistical data collection activities at Provincial/ District/Taluka Level • To identify sector/areas where data is either not exist or data gap is large and to develop Statistical series to reduce data gap by conducting census/ surveys/case studies, etc. • Reduce time lag in data collection to bring out Bureau's regular/adhoc publications timely and also enhance scope and coverage of existing publications. • Improve scope and coverage of Monthly Survey of Industrial Production & Employment, and other socio-economic sectors. • Conducting Human Rural Settlements survey in all the districts of Sindh having population 200 and above to identify the development gaps for the use of planners and policy makers.
