Bell Work • What does it mean to weld? • Hint: What are we doing when we weld?
Area: Agricultural Mechanics Unit: Lab Safety Lesson: 7. Identify How an oxyacetylene welder works
Objectives: • Describe how an oxyacetylene welder works. • Label 12 parts of oxyacetylene system. • Label 10 parts of welding torch • Label 11 Parts of the cutting torch
What is oxyacetylene welding? • A process that combines and uses oxygen and acetylene together. • It is used to melt the work and fuse it to another piece of metal.
Oxygen • Oxygen is a colorless, tasteless, odorless gas that is slightly heavier than air • Tank: Made up of a single plate of high grade steel that has no seams. It is heat treated to activate maximum strength and has a capacity of 220 cu ft at a pressure of 2000 psi (13,790 kPa) and a temperature of 70°F (21°C) • Because of their high pressure, oxygen cylinders undergo extensive testing prior to their release for work, and must be periodically tested thereafter.
Acetylene Tank • Acetylene is a colorless, flammable gas composed of carbon and hydrogen. • Tank: filled with porous materials such as balsa wood, charcoal, corn pith, or Portland cement. Along with Acetone, a colorless, flammable liquid, until about 40 percent of the porous material is saturated. • The porous material acts as a large sponge -> absorbs the acetone -> absorbs the acetylene -> reduces acetylene gas volume
Regulators • The single stage oxygen regulator reduces the cylinder pressure of a gas to a working pressure in one step.
Group Activity Your role in your group: 1. Reader 2. Presenter 3. Tape Checker 4. Final Say Person 5. Presenter Helper
Part One: • You will have 5 minutes to label the diagram I give you. Please place tape on the sides to keep your labels in place and so we can see them when we put them on the projector.
Part Two: • You will now have the next 3 minutes to look at another groups diagram that Mrs. Boelts will be giving to you. During these 3 minutes you are to check to see if it is correctly labeled. If you feel it is not correctly labeled go ahead and make the changes you feel are necessary. However, if you do make changes be pre-paired to justify and defend why your group has changed the label.
Part Three • You will have the next 5 minutes to look at the last diagram that Mrs. Boelts will be giving you in a moment. During the next 5 minutes you are to look over the diagram and check to see if it is correctly labeled. If your group feels it is not correctly labeled go ahead and change it at this time. This will be the diagram your group’s number 2 person will be presenting at the end of the 5 minutes. Like before if you change what another group has labeled you will need to justify why your group has changed the label.
Part Four: • Group presentations. You have 3 minutes to present your diagram.
Summary • How does an oxyacetylene work? • 2 tanks (1 Oxygen and 1 Acetylene) • Regulators- Reduce pressures to working pressure • Hoses- from regulators to torch • Torch handle- mixes oxygen and acetylene and valves are used to set flame. Once you set acetylene you do not change it again!
