Change Agents, Administrators, and Geoscience ProgramsTeam discussions, updates, and action plans A national network of teams of 2YC geoscience faculty catalyzing change in • Their teaching • Their geoscience program • Their region • Support academic success of all students • Broaden participation in geoscience • Facilitate students’ professional pathways into geoscience Importance of administrator involvement and support Consider sustainability
Spirit of inquiry Is geoscience enrollment increasing? Departmental/Program Practices Inventory What is participation in geoscience program vs college by demographics? Course-level outcomes measures What is success (C or higher) in different geoscience courses? What is the progression of our students/majors into geoscience pathways? How are we engaging colleagues in our program, department, and campus, including adjuncts? What are effective strategies to address program needs and goals?
Strengthening your geoscience program Where are critical places where you can make a difference and have an impact in your geoscience program/department? Moving program goals into actions
Highline College Example NEED: Geology 107 (Natural Hazards) has a lower success rate (68%) than other geology courses GOAL: Increase class average success rate (“C” grade or higher) by 5% in the next term • POSSIBLE STRATEGIES: • Incorporate metacognition activities into the course • Broaden evaluation methods to allow students to show mastery of course content in different ways. • Scaffold the writing assignments • Develop assignments that include the Writing Center • Restructure student feedback -“I’m giving you some critical feedback because I expect that you can do the work.” • Emphasize the place-based nature of the course and assignments
Team discussions and Action plans • Team discussions: team/program work on following topics • Addressing the three strands, including measures of success • Supporting the success of all students • Broadening participation • Facilitating students’ professional pathways in geoscience - careers, transfer • Working for change at the program, department, and/or institution level • Engaging your program colleagues, including adjuncts • Working with other colleagues and/or offices and/or initiatives on campus … Type responses for each topic in team/program workspace page Break 9:45-10:00 • Action planning: moving your discussion forward to develop your program implementation/action plan for next year Type notes in team/program workshop page
Team discussions: Guiding questions to consider For each of the three strands, what are key needs/opportunities, goals, and strategies for your program? What is their relationship to course-level outcomes data or other measures of success? • What are the most important needs/opportunities for your program from different perspectives (e.g., Change Agents, administrator, outcomes measures, other data)? • Identify your goals. • What strategies are you using now to address your goals? What strategies might you use to be even more effective? • How do your goals and strategies tie into your outcomes measures? • How do your goals and strategies relate to institutional priorities or initiatives? How will you work for change at the program, department, and/or institutional level? • How will you engage your program colleagues, including adjuncts? • How will you work with other colleagues and/or offices and/or initiatives on campus? Type your responses in team workshop pages Let us know if you’d like to discuss a question with one or more of the project personnel
Action plans: Guiding questions to consider What are your implementation plans for the coming year, keeping in mind the need to address all three strands by the end of the project and to engage your colleagues? Who will do what, and when? What are your measures of success? • How will you address each of the three strands? • Next year, what changes would you want to see in your outcomes data? • What are your plans for working at the program, department, and/or institutional level? • What are your plans for engaging your program colleagues, including adjuncts? • Who can you partner with (champion team)? • How do your goals and strategies relate to institutional priorities or initiatives? • What are institutional resources you can tap into? • What are your levers for change? • What do you need to support your efforts? from SAGE 2YC? from your campus? from your administration? Type your plan in team workshop pages Let us know if you’d like to discuss a question with one or more of the project personnel
Breakout groups Administrators: Leveraging your Change Agents (Coral III) - Pamela Eddy Change Agents: Teams begin developing slides about your action plans (Coral I & II)
Action Plan presentation Prepare a 5-minute presentation (3-6 slides) about your geoscience program implementation plan and upload it • Include a title slide • Address each of the three strands including needs, goals, strategies • Address plans for working for change at the program, department, and/or institutional level, including plans for engaging program colleagues, including adjuncts • Relate to institutional goals and/or initiatives • Include measures of success, outcomes measures
Finalize program action plan slides Prepare a 5-minute presentation (3-6 slides) about your geoscience program implementation plan and upload it • Include a title slide • Address each of the three strands including needs, goals, strategies • Address plans for working for change at the program, department, and/or institutional level, including plans for engaging program colleagues, including adjuncts • Relate to institutional goals and/or initiatives • Include measures of success, outcomes measures Upload your slides via the link on the program page

Please use sharpies to write One response per sticky note • After each presentation, we will collect sticky note responses • After all presentations, teams will discuss responses and refine their implementation plan Get Feedback Share Revise
