GULF INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY (GIWW) • Total of 375 miles (12’x125’ WHL/12’x150’ EHL) • 301 miles main stem • 66 miles Morgan City to Port Allen Alternate Route • 8 miles Algiers Canal Alternate Route • Eight Navigation Locks • Calcasieu Lock • Leland Bowman Lock • Port Allen Lock • Bayou Sorrel Lock • Bayou Boeuf Lock • IHNC Lock • Harvey Lock • Algiers Lock Gulf of Mexico
ALGIERS LOCK • 75’ x 797’ • Completed 1954 • Currently replacing the operator control systems. • No major concerns or issues.
BAYOU BOEUF LOCK • 75’ x 1156’ • Completed 1954 • Damaged sector gate is currently being repaired on site. • The lock is operating at open pass, with current low water.
BAYOU SORREL LOCK • 56’ x 797’, one of the smallest locks on the GIWW west of the Mississippi River. • Completed 1952, scheduled for replacement with construction starting in 2009. • Design Documentation Report completed last month. • Regional design team is currently producing plans and specifications. • The current lock elevation is 5’ below the project flood with the higher flowline. • Replacement lock will be a 75’ x 1200’ concrete chamber.
CALCASIEU LOCK • 75’ x 1205’ • Completed 1950 • Remove and replace the damaged lock dolphin in June 2008. Minimal closures are anticipated for this work.
HARVEY LOCK • 75’ x 425’ • Completed 1934 • No major concerns or issues.
IHNC LOCK • 75’ x 640’ • Completed 1923 • Dewatering is scheduled for August 2008 (45-60 closure), funding permitted. • The lock has a 99.2% operational rating, with the two bridge curfews that impede traffic. • Additional funding is required for the necessary enhancements to ensure reliability. Though not included in the FY08 budget, an amount of $25-$30 million is required.
RECENTLY COMPLETED WORK AT IHNC IHNC Lock: Replaced river end, east side guidewall with Floating Guidewall Concrete Pontoon with Fiberglass Plastic Composite Wale System Constructed off-site Installed Oct 2005 with only 1 day lock closure Similar guidewall is needed on the west side which takes abuse Completed electrical rewiring of lock July 2007
IHNC - CONCEPTUAL VIEW OF PROPOSED PROJECT Recommended Plan: 110’ x 1200’ Cost - $804 million River and Harbor Act Of 1956 authorized the construction of the new lock.
LELAND BOWMAN LOCK • 110’ x 1200’ • Completed 1985 • No major concerns or issues, this is the newest GIWW lock in the New Orleans District. • New mooring buoys are scheduled to be installed later this year.
PORT ALLEN LOCK • 84’ x 1198’ • Completed 1961 • A major dewatering is scheduled for September – October 2008 (45-60 day closure). • The Mississippi River end miter gates will be replaced during the dewatering. • The lock forebay was dredged in July 2007.
