How did we get here? • What’s in a Name
What are the Issues • For the past decade - considerable debate about supporting a Rehab Profession • Numerous rehab-related organisations have emerged • IUA/ABI Rehab Working Party • CMSUK • Babicm • BICMA • VRA • BSRM • and others
What are the Issues • Recent alarm about ‘Rehab Farmers’ - Compensation Bill • Pathways to Work has raised the profile of rehab/ RTW efforts - will this create a demand which can’t be met? • What are the opportunities for Public-private -voluntary partnerships?
What are the Underlying Causes? • Voc Rehab isn’t a Recognised Profession - Neither is Case Management • Rehab Job titles don’t always tell you what skills a provider has (e.g. community matrons?) • Purchasers can be reluctant to use rehab providers because they don’t know what they are getting, or the quality. - These are constraining the growth of voc. rehab services in the UK
Our Concept We believe that the UK needs an independent, impartial, respected and recognised entity, which will: • promote VR and case management as a profession in its own right • promote best practice • enable high quality training • enable high quality accreditation/certification for individuals and organisations providing these services • eventually, regulate the profession
Our Concept (2) ALSO: • Research to further the knowledge base of the profession • academic/evidence-based • proof of concept research • cost-effectiveness • bridge the gap between the public, voluntary and private sectors
Your reaction? • Is this a UK-wide issue - are there regional differences • Are there regional solutions • Are there local initiatives in the pipeline • Have we hit the key issues • What have we missed • Potential barriers • Benefits
Will this work in the UK? If so: • How do we get the message out • How do we gain support • Who needs to be involved • How will we fund it!!
Next Steps - Maintaining the momentum • Ideas please!
