Education • Studied hydrography (charting bodies of water) • When he was in school at Jesuit school he studied Latin, Greek, math, and geography. • Both Joliet and Marquette played the flute and trumpet.
Reasons for exploration • France wanted furs for hats and coats, riches, spices, larger empires and to expand Christianity.
