How are rocks different than minerals? • Minerals are homogeneous, naturally occurring, inorganic solids. Each mineral has a definite chemical composition and a characteristic crystalline structure. • Rocks are made up of one or more minerals formed through either crystallization of molten magma , settling of particles or reheating and pressure applied to pre-existing rocks with no set chemical composition or atomic structure. • Rocks are minerals but not all minerals are rocks.
How do we use rocks? Mount Rushmore is made from granite which is igneous rock Washington Monument is made of white marble which is a metamorphic rock
What is a Rock? Mixture of one or more minerals For Example: Granite contains 3 minerals Rock salt mass of single minerals Coal organic materials
Once a rock is formed does it remain the same type of rock always? Possibly but not likely !!!
What processes produce and transform rocks? • Heat & Pressure (Plate tectonics) • Weather or Erosion (surface forces)

All rocks can be sorted into one of three types and identified by the processes that formed them • Igneous rocks: cooling magma/lava • Metamorphic rocks: heat and pressure deep inside Earth • Sedimentary rocks: breaking and hardening of Earth’s surface
