Communications • Teacher Web site: http://bvms.tvusd.k12.ca.us/~KMcdonald/index.htm • Grades, HW Calendar, Models, Rubrics, and assignments to print. • Phone: 294-6600x3613 • BVMS Web site: Go to Grades or Staff websites • Students upload Google Chrome to use Google Docs and share. • See Grading Scale and Rubrics for Work Habits and citizenship.

  3. Pinnacle Grading • See BVMS web site and click on Grades. • Put in student’s ID and M/F for male/female. • Screen will show overall grades, but must click on left drop-down menu for each class report to see progress. • Teacher comments can be helpful, but these comments do not show up in email

  4. Writing takes time to grade, so I indicate if received or not. The actual grade shows later. • In LA, Writing Assignments collected receive “3” means received on time, completed. “0” or blank means no work received “2” in LA means writing is received late It takes 1-2 weeks to enter all LA essay scores,but you can see immediately if it was handed in or not with this number system.

  5. Set up Pinnacle E-mail • Pinnacle will ask you about emailing grade reports to you. • Set the filter for whatever you want. • Can set for it to email every time a grade drops to 70% in any class. • Remember. Comments will not show in email.

  6. LA Common Core Standards stress: • Critical thinking involving reading of fiction and non-fiction, stressing vocabulary in context.When reading, students will notice, question, and connect to create meaning. • Writing with an emphasis on forming a central idea and supporting it by using a specific structure based on the author’s purpose • Language skills emphasizing sentence structure • Speaking with academic language when partnering

  7. Common Core digs deeper. • Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. • Write informative/explanatory essays to examine a topic and convey ideas.  • Read and analyze relevant non-fiction articles.Read literature with the help of noting specific signposts or clues that lead to questions and inference • Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, and organization of task is suited for the purpose and audience.

  8. Reading performances • Million Word Log or a Reading Response Log • Novel Projects – Book in Bag analyzing theme • Biography/Autobiography Poster + Essay – Non-fiction • Central Idea: Formative and Summative Assessments • Summarizing skills practiced with note taking for SS • Reading Methods practiced with marking up and marginalizing a text for understanding, questioning, inferring, and summing up. Coding signposts, leading to questions and meaning.

  9. Structures and Features of Nonfiction Informational Texts and Materials • Textbooks, reference materials, historical documents • Biographies, diaries, journals, speeches • Magazine and news articles • Websites • Internet features • Brochures • Applications • How-to-Directions

  10. Forms of Writing Explanatoryexplainsideas: compares-contrasts, relates news story, explains cause and effect, a problem-solution, or how to Summaryexplains in brief exactly what author wrote. No personal views or interpretation. Argument persuades stating a thesis or opinion which must be supported with evidence ie., Persuasive piece or Response to Literature Personal Narrative explains one incident: My eyes immediately met the hard, bright lights hanging directly above. I soon realized that I hurt all over. .

  11. Writing: Google Docs/Feedback/Peer Review/Revisions/Portfolio • Teacher or peer feedback encourages revisions. • On-Task Writing during class gets a performance grade. Peer editing is crucial.Students will share writing on Google Docs and be required to give feedback to two others. • Sometimes we trade in class and/or read our writing to our group. Revisions expected. • All writing is placed in portfolio.

  12. LA District Assessments* First Semester • Argument/Persuasive Writing in late November or early December *Will teach explanatory structure first • District Language Arts Assessmenton reading and language in December before the Semester 1 ends. Second Semester • Argument Writing/Literary Response Spring • District Language Arts Assessment in May

Reading and preparing • Since we only have 48 minutes a day to cover all areas of Language Arts, it is crucial that students complete their homeworkassignments. • Practice and preparation make it easier for students to discuss ideasand participate using academic languageto express their understanding.
