Coping Strategies of Middle School Students and How We Can Help Parent Talk with Middle School Counselor Jill Tulonen Wednesday September 26, 2007
What is a Coping Strategy? Coping strategies refer to the specific efforts, both behavioral and psychological, that people employ to master, tolerate, reduce, or minimize stressful events.
Active vs. Avoidant Coping Strategies • Active coping strategies are either behavioral or psychological responses designed to change the nature of the stressor itself or how one thinks about it • Avoidant coping strategies lead people into activities (such as alcohol use) or mental states (such as withdrawal) that keep them from directly addressing stressful events
We should keep in mind: 95% of our Middle School students have coping strategies that work very well for them Some coping strategies work well for one person, but maybe not for another Just as other subjects, coping strategies taken to extremes can actually cause a stressor to temporarily go away, not allowing the person to actually deal with the stress
Active Coping Strategies • Seeking help if overwhelmed or troubled • Accepting other’s thanks and praise • Laughing – keeping a sense of humor • Writing in a journal or diary • After school activities or clubs
Eating well and sleeping well • Reading books or topics that interest and uplift • Being open with feelings • Spending time with family and friends • Volunteering • Spirituality • Not tolerating physical, emotional or sexual abuse
Avoidant Coping Strategies • Excessive exercise • Lying or hiding information • Withdrawal • Bullying/cyberbullying • Dysfunctional relationships • Eating disorders • Substance use/abuse • Self injury
How Can We Help • Find out what is/are the stressor(s) • Why is it a stressor? • What active strategies might help? • Is there a need for counseling or other outside help? • Do our students know that we are there to help them in a positive manner no matter what?
