Reading For Pleasure By Kevin Dearing
What is Reading for pleasure? • Reading for pleasure refers to reading that we do of our own free will, anticipating the satisfaction that we will get from the act of reading. • It also refers to reading that having begun at someone else’s request, we continue because we are interested in it and it’s our own choice.
The Research - DfE 2012 • Reading attainment and writing ability • Text comprehension and grammar • Breadth of vocabulary • Positive reading attitudes • Greater self-confidence as a reader • Pleasure in reading in later life • General knowledge • A better understanding of other cultures • Community participation • A greater insight into human nature • Children who read for pleasure have higher average attainment in all subjects than those who do not
“Reading for pleasure is more important to a child's educational achievement than their family's wealth or social class”. DfE.
How can you encourage children to read for pleasure? • Paired reading with children of different age groups. • National Literacy Trust event (including Story teller and free books) • Library trips. • The library card challenge. • ‘Show and Tell’ about our favourite books. • Writing book reviews for homework. • Quiet space in playground for reading.
Any success? • Since September 73% of the children who did not have library cards now have them. • Children share their experiences of books through reviews and show and tells. • Children are visiting the library more than before the initiative was launched. • Some children are using the quiet space for reading and for finishing off good books.
Reflection • Enthusiasm generated by one-off events may be short-lived if focus is not long-term. • Share ideas – add to time tables.
