  1. Edmonton’s RDF Facility – CONCEPT to IMPLEMENTATION SWANA Northern Lights Conference, Edmonton, AB – June 20, 2013 Lena Aitken, Project Engineer, City of Edmonton Uwe Eschenhorst, Project Manager, Vecoplan LLC

  2. Outline • History of Edmonton’s journey to Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) production. • RDF – what is it? • RDF Project – from concept to final design • Welcome Vecoplan! • Major Equipment Supplier • Design Build Construction Management Services

  3. History • Cloverbar Landfill is getting full! • 2009 was estimated closure date • Starting premise – there IS a better solution to landfilling • City already had very established recycling and composting programs, currently diverting 60% of the waste • Looking to process the remaining 75,000 tonnes/yr of Composting residuals and 5,000 tonnes/yr of MRF residuals. • Specific targets include: • Increase Edmonton’s landfill diversion rate from 60% to 90% • Reduce Edmonton’s need for landfilling, without going to traditional combustion systems.

  4. 2010 15 years of development 1995

  5. IPTF Biofuels Facility RDF – What is it? • RDF is the feedstock for the future biofuels facility

  6. March 2010 Pre-Processing Area Transfer Station August 2009 IPTF Functions and Phasing November 2012 Phase 2 Phase 3 RDF Facility Phase 1

  7. Transfer Station MSW Organics to ECF RDF to Biofuels RDF Facility Pre-process Area - MRF Residuals - ECF Residuals - Wood Waste RDF – What is it? • Produced in the 3rd Phase of the Integrated Process and Transfer Facility (IPTF) • Sort out the most suitable material from the trash and residuals. • Process it to achieve homogenous, quality, and uniform material.

  8. RDF Project – Concept to Design Considerations along the way…. • Low speed shreddervs. High speed shredder • Separate explosion proof building required to house the high speed shredders. • Equipment Supply & Design Build Construction Management vs. Design–Bid–Build • Equipment manufacturing firm designs and supplies equipment systems with demonstrated performance. • Performance guarantee for the production of RDF.

  9. RDF Concept in the Beginning In-Feed Primary Shredding Screening Heavies Removal Fines Bunker Heavies Bunker Ferrous Removal Non-Ferrous Removal ‘RDF Block Diagram’ that was used in the Request For Proposal Ferrous Bunker Non-Ferrous Bunker Secondary Shredding RDF Conveying

  10. RDF Project Milestones

  11. Final RDF Design

  12. Welcome Vecoplan! • Major Equipment Supplier • Design Build Construction Management Services for the IPTF Phase 3 (RDF) Project • Project Manager: Uwe Eschenhorst
