GIST GERB Status Report Nigel Morris 3rd May 2007
GERB-3 Status • GERB-3 IEU returned from Alcatel • Modifications to three of the PCBs underway • QFM-3 has been removed from the IOU • Plan to repair QFM-3 is under discussion with GA
GERB-4 Status • GERB-4 instrument delivered to Alcatel on 5th March 2007, but… • A problem with the flight FPA (#FM3) meant that this had to be removed. So, GERB-4 currently has a non-flight FPA fitted • FPA was found to have damage to bond wires and one of the ASICs • An investigation into the damage did not reveal conclusively how this could of occurred, but most likely explanation is that a slender object (such as an Allen key or screwdriver) was accidentally inserted into the open edge of the FPA
GERB-4 FPA • Fortunately there is a third FPA (#FM2) and at least one good spare from the GERB 2/3 programme • Consortium reviewed both FPAs and came to the conclusion that there was not much to choose between them (no. of working pixels, TC, noise, etc.) • #FM2 has one advantage in that it is newer therefore this was chosen to replace the flight FPA • Calibration of the FPA is currently under way at Leicester
Schedule • GERB-4 will be returned from Alcatel at the end of May 2007 (TBC) • Some minor NCRs will be investigated and if necessary repairs made. Otherwise it will be put into storage • FPA calibration will be complete by beginning of August • FPA will be fitted and aligned in GERB-4 IOU • Remainder of GERB-4 verification testing will take place over following weeks. • Ready for start of instrument level calibration around the beginning of September 2007.
GERB-3 Schedule • After QFM is repaired, IOU will be re-assembled • GERB-3 instrument will then complete its verification programme • Will also be ready for calibration around the beginning of September, but will clearly follow on when GERB-4 is finished • Both GERBs will then go into storage at RAL.
