  1. Overview of New Educational Supervisors Review Structure

  2. This Power-Point highlights some of the changes that have been made to the Educational Supervisor’s Report (ESR) These changes to the ESR have been made in response to feedback received from Educational Supervisors, Trainees, Trainers and Secondary Care Clinical Supervisors and should improve the usability and quality of the ESR in a number of ways. Introduction

  3. Introduction The “flow” of the report has been improved, and better presentation of the material will help to improve decision-making and the process of making a global judgement of “progression towards competence”.

  4. Introduction We believe that this revision will improve the quality and consistency of ES reports as well as improving the all-important educational feedback to trainees

  5. Introduction At first glance, the updated review process may look like an increase in the amount of work to complete during a review. In actual fact, it is merely formalising parts of the process that should always have been considered and ensuring that a complete review of the ePortfolio is undertaken.

  6. Create Review The Review is now broken up into steps that are completed in sequence. Each step can be saved and completed at a later stage. The initial Create Review page allows for setting up a review in the system. This is useful for monitoring evidence and allowing for PSQ and MSF results release before the review itself is conducted. In all steps of the review, “Save” saves what has been currently entered and “Continue” takes the Educational Supervisor (ES) to the next step. “Continue” requires all compulsory fields to be completed.

  7. Curriculum Coverage Curriculum Coverage hasn’t changed except now the ES will see the Curriculum Coverage table when they enter in the comments. This should make it easier to complete instead of having to remember this when filling in one review page. All sections of the Review that ask the ES to look at a specific area will now have that information present. Next to the text boxes, open questions are now being used to encourage more useful and formative entries rather than yes/no responses

  8. Skills Log The Skills Log has been slightly redesigned in a number of ways. Firstly, the Foundation DOPS have been removed. These will now appear under the “Other Skills Submitted” section. Secondly, a Satisfactory DOPS column is now present. DOPS present shows how many have been completed. Satisfactory DOPS shows those that have been submitted with an overall rating of at least “Borderline for Completion”. The Trainee Ratings are sectioned off to make it clear this is Trainee Input. *DOPS should be assessed by senior clinicians with active experience of the procedure being undertaken. This may include nurse clinical specialists, nurse practitioners or practice nurses

  9. PDP A new section of the Review looks specifically at the PDP and asks the ES to make comments on the PDP. You will see items entered within the last year here.

  10. Trainee Competence Rating • The Trainee Competence Ratings are now review specific. These will need to be completed by the trainee for each review. • The trainee can fill these in for the review once it has been created it for them. • The Trainee Section the ES sees is read-only for their reference. • To help understand them, the competence areas have been grouped into four clusters. A line describes each cluster heading. • Relationship

  11. Trainee Competence Rating • Diagnostics

  12. Trainee Competence Rating • Management • And Professionalism • The competences themselves have not changed, but the clustering is designed to help you view the performance as a whole. • The Trainee will have to complete their own assessment of these areas before they can accept the completed review.

  13. Competence Rating The ES rating of the Trainee competence areas are also now review specific. You will see the table with the contribution of assessments and log entries to the areas. These entries will increase in number as the Trainee progresses through reviews. The table will now only link to those assessments and CBDs where the particular competence is rated. The ES view of these are divided into the four clusters as well.

  14. Competence Rating The edit icon for a rating takes the ES into the familiar screen for entering their comments. The standard for licensing in the competency area is now placed at the top. To improve national consistency, it’s important you read this before making your rating (the full framework is still available below the input form). The ES will now also be asked to enter actions before the next review. The ES will be able to see the recommended actions from the last review here and use this to help inform the current rating.

  15. NFD – Below Expectations NFD – Meets Expectations NFD – Above Expectations Competent for Licensing Excellent Expanded Rating Scale The Rating Scale has also been expanded. If the ES rates the Trainee as ‘NFD’, they will now be able to indicate how they are doing in relation to what would be expected at that stage of training. This should improve formative feedback to The trainee. To avoid misunderstanding, the term ‘competent’ has been changed to ‘competent for licensing’. We would expect most ratings to be “NFD” whilst in ST1 and ST2, with a move towards “Competent for Licensing” and “Excellent” during ST3.

  16. Finishing the Review The final page of the review should be familiar, it’s very similar to the current comments page of the present review. However each section that the ES have completed previously will now be automatically populated here. These sections can still be edited as required.

  17. Finishing the Review The ES Competence Ratings also will appear on the Review Summary, and these can be edited as well if needed.

  18. Finishing the Review The last comment boxes remain similar to how they are now. These will need to be completed on this page, but having reviewed all the evidence in the ePortfolio, making these global decisions should be easier.
