  1. The Power of Collaboration through Technology

  2. Social Networking is no longer just a way to connect with your friends... A growing trend among top educators is to utilize these same tools as a means to communicate and share ideas and resources in a way never possible before.

  3. Why use technology to collaborate? • Networking tools like Skype and Twitter allow educators from around the world to participate in engaging discussion and webinars that enhance our profession all without ever leaving their classrooms. • Powerful tools like these are even available on your phone!

  4. Communicate with other teachers and professors from all over the world. Start here

  5. Twitter • Twitter is a fast-growing collaboration tool among educators and administrators. • Communication: teacher to teacher, teacher to administrator, teacher to student, student to student, etc. • If our students need instant feedback, so do we. • The best thing: it’s free!

  6. Twitter 101: Important vocabulary: Tweet- A message you send out to the world of 140 characters or less. Re-tweet (RT)- When you agree with a statement you see on Twitter and want to reiterate it or share it with others. It is polite to thank others for re-tweeting you. Hashtag(#)- A way of labeling or “tagging” a tweet so that others can search for it easily by topic or resource. At Mention (@ryanmocarski)- Including the “at” symbol before someone’s Twitter name is a way to notify them publicly that you have mentioned them in your tweet or to share articles and information with them. Direct Message (DM)-This is a way to privately send a message on Twitter.

  7. What others are saying... “ I use twitter to share what positive teaching and learning opportunities take place at GLHS; I use it to search for articles or blogs from other educators to share with my staff and I use it to connect with other educators across the globe. We engage in rich dialogue about education reform and other relevant topics today.” Dwight Carter, Principal Gahanna Lincoln High School

  8. How far can technology take you? • An important aspect of Twitter is getting good information by following the right people. • Junk is out there if you look for it. Suggested people to “follow:” • @cybraryman1 (Jerry Blumengarten) Education Specialist • @DrSarahEaton (Dr. Sarah Eaton, Calgary) Literacy • @Dwight_Carter (Dwight Carter) Education/Administration Grow as a professional and have more of an impact on your students.

  9. I want more information.... • See handout for the 100 best technology tools in education for 2011.
