Science Day L.O: To carry out a science experiment explaining what I think will happen and why along with what I have found out.
In the 1940s a Swiss engineer was out walking his dog. When he got home he realised that he and his dog were both covered in ‘burrs’ (a type of seed sack from plants). He looked at one under a microscope and saw it had lots of little hooks – that’s why it hooked onto his jumper.
He used this principle to make a new fastening device, which he called Velcro. These days it’s really common. It just goes to show that looking at plants carefully can be very useful!
